Aetna (NYSE: AET) and the Aetna Foundation together awarded nearly $800,000 in community grants and sponsorships in Florida during 2010. The grants were made to organizations addressing a variety of health issues, including obesity among adults and children, racial and ethnic equity in health care, and needed improvements in the integration and coordination of health care services. In addition, grants were made in support of arts and cultural programs, human services and academic organizations, faith-based initiatives and many others.

Grant amounts and recipients in Broward County and Ft. Lauderdale were:

  • $25,000 to Hispanic Unity of Florida Inc.;
  • $15,000 to the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County Inc.;
  • $12,500 to the United Way of Broward County Inc.;
  • $10,000 to FLIPANY (Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth);
  • $10,000 to Food For The Poor Inc.;
  • $2,500 to Covenant House Florida;
  • $2,500 to the American Diabetes Association Inc.; and
  • $2,500 to the Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center Inc.

Grant amounts and recipients in Jacksonville were:

  • $25,000 to the American Heart Association Inc.;
  • $25,000 to the Baptist Health Foundation;
  • $25,000 to WJCT;
  • $15,000 to the American Diabetes Association;
  • $10,000 to Volunteers in Medicine;
  • $5,000 to Communities In Schools of Jacksonville; and
  • $5,000 to HandsOn Jacksonville Inc.

Grant amounts and recipients in the Greater Miami area were:

  • $85,000 to TeamFootWorks;
  • $35,000 to the United Way of Miami-Dade;
  • $35,000 to the University of Miami;
  • $25,000 to the Miami Police Athletic League Inc.;
  • $10,000 to Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation;
  • $10,000 to Miami Dade College Foundation;
  • $10,000 to the Florida Heart Research Institute;
  • $10,000 to South Florida Sports Foundation Inc.;
  • $10,000 to Voice of Love Training and Development Center Inc.; and
  • $5,000 to Amigos Together For Kids Inc.

Grant amounts and recipients in Orlando were:

  • $65,000 to MicheLee Puppets Inc.; and
  • $50,000 to the University of Central Florida Foundation Inc.

Grant amounts and recipients in Tampa were:

  • $264,000 to the University of South Florida.

Nationwide during 2010, Aetna and the Aetna Foundation gave $15.6 million in grants and sponsorships. In addition, Aetna employees, retirees and directors donated an additional $6.9 million through the company's matching gift program, bringing combined giving in communities where Aetna employees and customers live and work to nearly $22.5 million. And, Aetna’s employees donated more than dollars, generously giving nearly 335,000 hours of their personal time and talents in communities nationwide. Since 2003, Aetna employees have logged more than 2.3 million volunteer hours.

“During 2010, Aetna and the Aetna Foundation were pleased to provide grants to 661 nonprofit organizations nationwide, and to match the generosity of our employees to another 9,492 organizations within our communities,” said Anne C. Beal, M.D., M.P.H., Aetna Foundation president. “We also made significant progress toward our goals of concentrating our grants on specific health issues of national concern, giving nearly $2.35 million to the fight against obesity, $1.24 million to improve racial and ethnic equity in health and health care, and more than $1 million to support better integrated health care in America.”
