Summer weather has finally arrived, so Foster Grant, America’s original sunglasses company, has put together its annual “Choosing Sunglasses” guide to help you select the best frames for your face shape – at affordable prices. Foster Grant, known for the famous, “Who’s that behind those Foster Grants?” tagline, continues to offer fashionable, on-trend sunglasses at great prices – styles retail nationwide for $30.00 and under.

Karen Goldman, Design Director for Foster Grant and Quantum Optics Sunglasses, brands under the FGX International (NASDAQ: FGXI) umbrella, offers her tips for selecting sunglasses for summer:

SQUARE FACE: If you have a face with a strong jaw line, square chin, and broad forehead, try sunglasses that are rounded or oval in contrast to the angular lines of the face.

OVAL FACE: An oval face has mostly balanced proportions. The chin is slightly narrower than the forehead and the cheekbones tend to be high. Lucky you! Most sunglasses shapes are flattering on an oval face. Square, rectangular and geometric shapes will add angles to the soft curves of the face.

ROUND FACE: Width and length proportions are typically the same with a round face. Avoid round sunglasses. Look instead for angular, geometric shapes that sharpen facial features. Rectangular and horizontal styles will make faces appear longer and thinner.

HEART FACE: A broad forehead and wide cheekbones that narrow to a small chin constitute a heart-shaped face. Trendy cat-eye styles or butterfly shapes will flatter this face type. Round frames will help soften the forehead, while bottom-heavy frames will balance the narrower chin.

What are the trends for sunglasses this summer?

This summer, we’ll see a return to the slightly oversized aesthetic of the 1960s. Cat-eyes will make more of a comeback, while rounds are becoming more popular. Thicker and even two-tone frames are all incredibly chic. Aviators are always hot, and this summer we have developed a platinum mirror coating – perfect for catching those bright summer rays. We’re seeing more global influences as well, with textured metal trims and new tortoise colorations.

When you’re shopping for sunglasses, what factors should be considered?

Comfort and fit are key when selecting sunglasses. The temple tips should rest against your head, behind your ears, but should not press too tightly. The glasses should sit on your nose bridge, high enough so your cheeks do not touch the bottom of the frame. All sunglasses should offer UVA/UVB protection, but check the tag or lens label to be sure. All our brands are 100% UVA/UVB protective.

Also consider your lifestyle. Are you sporty and active? Find sunglasses that will meet the demands of your activity. If you wear reading glasses, consider SunReaders by Foster Grant’s sister brand, Magnivision – fashionable reading glasses that have tinted lenses and styles that look like sunglasses. No need to remove and swap out eyewear anymore. Now it’s easy and chic to keep reading that quintessential summer novel on the beach!
