At Citrix Synergy™, where virtual computing takes center stage, thousands of attendees are meeting this week to discuss best practices for Desktop Transformation – the shift taking place in companies today as they move from the “PC Era” with its traditional distributed computing models, to the “Cloud Era” where desktop virtualization is rapidly becoming the mainstream approach to managing desktops, apps and data. To further accelerate this transition, Citrix made two related announcements today. To make virtual desktops easier to deploy, Citrix unveiled a free new online service called “Success Accelerator” that guides customers through each unique virtual desktop project, providing customized tips, tricks and best practices at every step of the way, gathered from the experiences of thousands of successful customer deployments. To reduce the cost of virtual desktops, Citrix also announced a new update to the company’s flagship Citrix XenDesktop® product that simplifies desktop transformation by reducing storage costs for VDI-based desktops by up to half.

Making Desktop Transformation Faster and Easier

The new Success Accelerator service aggregates the combined knowledge and experience of thousands of customers who have successfully deployed millions of virtual desktops, and makes their “lessons learned” readily accessible to new customers as they embark on their own desktop transformation projects. This free online service offers customers a proactive online implementation guide for new virtual desktop projects customized to each customer’s unique situation. For each new project a customer registers, the Success Accelerator service provides them with customized design decision guides, videos, tools, templates, and training, all designed to provide the right help at the right stage of the project. Each project includes:

  • Online Design Decisions Guide – gives customers customized advice as they walk through design decisions at each phase of their desktop virtualization project.
  • Interactive Implementation Guide – gives customers a customizable implementation guide specific to their project, which includes best practices, tutorial videos, training courses, and end-user communication templates.
  • 24/7 Access – the Success Accelerator service is accessible online via a MyCitrix log-in.

Making Desktop Transformation More Affordable

Another key way to accelerate desktop transformation is to reduce the cost of virtual desktop deployments, especially VDI-based desktops that typically require significant investments in expensive SAN-based storage. Citrix XenDesktop with IntelliCache takes a big step forward in this area by allowing frequent desktop read-write traffic to take place on a local server, rather than going back-and-forth over the network to a centralized storage environment. This innovative new approach can reduce storage traffic in VDI deployments by as much as 951 percent, cutting the cost of central storage in half. The new XenDesktop IntelliCache feature is available today with XenDesktop 5 Service Pack 1, and applies to any VDI-based desktop that uses Citrix XenServer as the backend hypervisor.

A new Desktop Transformation track includes five sessions presented by leading implementation architects to provide the latest best practices. Attendees will also be able to experience the Desktop Transformation Model first-hand at the Expo Hall where sections are organized to design, simplify and accelerate virtual desktop deployments. In the design section, solution architects will be standing by ready to discuss strategies for achieving the latest business goal. In the simplify section, 10 Citrix Ready® partners will be on-hand to explain state-of-the-art tools for assessing user segmentation, application and profile migrations. In the accelerate section, Citrix technical experts will be on-hand to whiteboard specific projects and address the toughest technical questions.
