Cintas Announces Winners of Good Riddance Day Contest
December 22 2011 - 9:41AM
Business Wire
Cintas Corporation today announced
the winners of the second annual Good Riddance Day Contest.
Kathleen Selman of Tampa, Fla., won the individual prize package
and Barrington Research Associates in Chicago won the business
prize package. As the individual prize package winner, Kathleen
will receive a five-night trip to New York City for Good Riddance
Day on Dec. 28, and designation as the first to say “good riddance”
to her worries or bad memories from 2011. Barrington Research
Associates won an office organization package.
An annual event that takes place in Times Square in the days
leading up to New Year’s Eve, Good Riddance Day brings hundreds of
people together to shed, and shred, their worst memories of 2011
and enter the New Year with a clean slate. This year, hundreds of
people and businesses across the nation submitted brief
descriptions of a 2011 memory or experience they would like to say
“good riddance” to heading into the New Year. After receiving more
than 600 entries, Cintas Document Management selected the
winners.
Kathleen won the contest for a chance to say “good riddance” to
long military deployments so her family of five children can see
their father and uncle more often and celebrate the holidays
together. With two close family members serving as active-duty
members in the U.S. Army, Kathleen and her children have learned to
cherish time together as a family. Taking part in her community,
Kathleen fosters underage kittens for the Humane Society,
volunteers with the Children’s Home and the Boy Scouts of America.
Both her husband and brother enjoy helping their community when
they’re home, and with long deployments, they aren’t able to
contribute as often as they’d like.
“It’s been a long journey with two family members active in the
military and shredding a copy of a deployment order symbolizes our
resilience as a family, ” Kathleen Selman said. “My husband and I
are excited to celebrate our anniversary on Dec. 31 in New York
City and start 2012 with each other.”
Barrington Research Associates entered the contest after more
than 28 years of old documents, since the inception of the Chicago
based business, began to overwhelm the office. The business is
still mostly paper based and was forced to use an extra office to
store the overflow of documents. Barrington Research Associates is
ready to say “good riddance” to outdated and unnecessary files and
get organized for 2012.
“Our company has grown significantly in the last few years and
with increased business and employees, we’re completely out of
storage space,” said Marietta Coles, Accounting and Human Resources
Manager, Barrington Research Associates. “We’re thrilled to receive
the office organization package, and a Cintas SmartShred™ event
will allow us to dispose of numerous outdated documents in a safe
and secure manner and start 2012 on the right foot.”
As the grand prize individual winner, Kathleen will receive:
- Two roundtrip airfare tickets
- Five-night stay at Wyndham Garden Hotel
– Times Square South
- Two VIP passes to an exclusive
pre-viewing of the Waterford Crystal Times Square New Year's Eve
Ball on Dec. 30

Shred" at Good Riddance Day 2011
- Two tickets to Madame Tussauds New
York
- Two tickets to the hit Broadway shows
Godspell and Rock of Ages as well as Off-Broadway’s Freud’s Last
Session
- Ticket package to Ripley’s Believe it
or Not!
- Ticket package to experience THE
RIDE
- Ticket package to Discovery Times
Square
- Dinner for two at Dave & Busters
and Planet Hollywood
As the grand prize business winner, Barrington Research
Associates will receive:
- A $1,000 gift card to an office supply
store
- A free office SmartShred™ event with an
official Cintas truck on site
- Breakfast and lunch for the entire
staff on the day of the event
“Both winners are very deserving, and we are excited to award
the grand prizes,” said Karen Carnahan, President and COO, Cintas
Document Management. “From old credit card bills to parking
tickets, consumers can say ‘good riddance’ to their worst memories
of 2011 and rest assured knowing they have been safely destroyed
using our secure mobile shredding unit.”
For this annual New Year’s tradition, Cintas is providing one of
its secure, mobile shredding trucks in Times Square for the public
to shred all their bad memories from 2011. Participants can bring
anything from a picture of an old flame to a pink slip or a
paid-off car loan.
Cintas teamed up with the co-organizers of New Year’s Eve in
Times Square, the Times Square Alliance and Countdown
Entertainment, to invite the public to say good riddance, once and
for all, to the bad memories of 2011. The event will take place on
Dec. 28th, on the Broadway Plaza between 43rd and 44th Streets from
noon to 1 p.m. The event is open to the public to discard any
unpleasant, embarrassing or downright depressing memories from
2011.
