BP PLC (BP.LN) said Thursday that it has appointed Helge Lund to succeed Carl-Henric Svanberg as company chairman on Jan. 1, 2019.

The oil-and-gas company said that Mr. Lund will join the board as chairman designate and non-executive director on Sept. 1, and will take up the role of chairman at the start of the new year.

Mr. Lund will stand down with immediate effect from his directorship of Schlumberger Ltd. (SLB), BP said. Mr. Lund is also chairman of health-care company Novo Nordisk AS (NVO).

"Our industry is changing faster than ever as the world focuses on meeting the dual challenge of more energy with fewer emissions," said Mr. Svanberg, BP's current chairman.

"Helge has a track record of leadership in addressing these issues, characterized by his open-minded and forward-looking approach," Mr. Svanberg said.
