today announced the winners of the 2017 European Data Heroes
Awards. The awards recognize Hortonworks customers who have
significantly transformed their enterprise by leveraging connected

Each winner exemplified outstanding achievements and meaningful
results with Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) and Hortonworks
DataFlow (HDF). The winners were recognized yesterday at a
Hortonworks gala preceding DataWorks Summit/Hadoop Summit
Munich.

A panel of industry experts selected the following as the 2017
winners across Europe:
Data Visionary - Daljit
Rehal, Global Director, Digital & Data Services
at Centrica
Mr. Rehal drove the creation of the Customer Information App
(CIA), built on HDP and HDF, which has transformed customer service
across millions of homes in the UK. Engineers consult the CIA to
understand each individual customer's history, needs and overall
satisfaction level. The resulting data means customers are provided
with smart energy bills which are more accurate. This has led to
higher levels of customer service and satisfaction.
Data Architect - Tobias Bürger, Lead Big Data Platform
& Architecture, BMW Group
BMW Group has uncovered new insights and use cases using HDP.
Mr. Bürger is the chief architect for overall architecture and
together with his team has established HDP within the BMW Group,
driving 100+ use cases. He also provides training for others within
the company.
Data Scientist - Rene
Castberg, Senior Researcher at the DNV
GL
Mr. Castberg helped develop Veracity, an industry data platform
designed to help companies improve data quality and manage the
ownership, security, sharing and use of data, borne from successful
use of data platforms running on Hadoop.
