Leading LTE for IoT chipmaker Sequans Communications S.A. (NYSE:SQNS) will demonstrate its LTE Category M1/NB1 (NB-IoT) chip, named Monarch, at NTT DOCOMO’S R&D Open House, to be held November 17-18, 2016 at NTT DOCOMO’s R&D Center in Yokosuka, Japan. At this annual event, NTT DOCOMO presents the latest advances in technology to its customers and partners. Sequans will demonstrate the LTE Cat M1 mode of Monarch in live communication with a Rohde & Schwarz eNodeB (base station) emulator.

“This demonstration is an important step in our evaluation of new technologies and we do appreciate support from Sequans with this Monarch platform,” said Toshiyuki Futakata, vice president and senior manager of NTT DOCOMO’s Communication Device Development Department, Radio Access Technology Group.

“We are very proud to collaborate with NTT DOCOMO to demonstrate Cat M1 technology in Japan,” said Georges Karam, Sequans CEO. “Monarch is the world’s first true LTE Cat M1 chip, meaning it is optimized in both silicon and software, built from the ground up to adhere to the new narrowband standards, thus becoming the smallest in size and lowest in power consumption of any LTE chip available in the market today. It is not an earlier generation chip modified with software to simulate the new Cat M1 capabilities. I am very excited to say that Monarch is operating as designed and we have made initial shipments for network deployments beginning in Q4.”

Monarch is the industry’s most highly integrated Cat M1/NB1 (NB-IoT) chip, whereby baseband, RF transceiver, power management, and RAM memory are integrated into a single, tiny 6.5 x 8.5 mm package. Monarch is fully compliant with the 3GPP’s Release 13 definitions for narrowband LTE (LTE-M and NB-IoT). In addition, Monarch supports advanced features such as programmable RF filtering for global band support in a single SKU, and proprietary dynamic power management technology for ultra low power consumption and operating life of 10+ years.
