Sequans Communications S.A. (NYSE: SQNS) announced that
Universal Scientific Industrial (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., (USI), a
leading electronics manufacturing company, is bringing to market an
LTE module powered by Sequans’ newest LTE chipset, Colibri, which
is optimized for the design of devices for the Internet of Things.
The module comprises the Sequans’ Colibri LTE chipset platform and
all other elements necessary for a complete LTE modem system. Based
on a Sequans’ reference design, the new module answers the needs of
M2M and IoT device-makers for a simple, all-in-one, single-mode LTE
chip solution for the design of affordable devices for numerous IoT
applications.
“We have found an excellent partner in USI, a company with
tremendous expertise in advanced SIP (system in package) techniques
and a long history of commercial success in miniaturized modules,”
said Georges Karam, Sequans CEO. “The LTE-enabled Internet of
Things is a clear trend and we see more and more device makers
looking for the easiest and most affordable way to LTE-enable their
M2M and IoT devices. We are very pleased to work with USI to bring
this new single-mode LTE module solution to market.”
At the heart of the module is Sequans’ newest LTE chipset
platform, Colibri that includes baseband and RF chips, an
integrated network and application CPU running Sequans’
carrier-proven LTE protocol stack, an IMS client, and a
comprehensive software package for over-the-air device management
and packet routing. The all-in-one module design then adds a
complete dual-band RF front-end for bands 4 and 13, IoT friendly
interfaces, LP-DDR SDRAM, embedded boot Flash, and power
management, all in a small 76-pin LGA package, 21.1 x 20.0 x 1.5
mm.
“We are pleased to partner with Sequans on the new Colibri
module,” said Albert Liu, GM of Wireless Product BU, USI. “The
market for single-mode LTE module solutions represents a huge
opportunity as LTE proliferates around the world and we believe the
module we are bringing to market will be an extremely valuable
solution for many IoT device makers.”
The first Colibri-based module manufactured by USI supports LTE
bands 4 and 13. Additional modules coming later will support a
variety of band combinations to address opportunities in various
markets around the world. The first carrier certification of the
new Colibri module is expected in Q4.
According to Machina Research, nearly 70 percent of M2M modules
shipped in 2022 will be LTE.
