Deutsche Post AG (DPW.XE) said Monday that its DHL Freight division plans to hire up to 500 new drivers in Europe to counter a regional shortage of drivers.

Initially DHL will run a pilot program at five locations in Germany, creating 30 new jobs. The new employees will take on driving duties and, if necessary, also take on other tasks at the branches, the company said.

"While we have sufficient loading capacity, we are noticing an increasingly urgent shortage of drivers," DHL Freight Chief Executive Uwe Brinks said.
