Harris Corporation Opens New Silver Spring, Maryland Office To Support Civil Programs Customers SILVER SPRING, Md., March 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation , a leading developer and systems integrator of mission-critical communications and information systems for the U.S. Government, has again expanded its Washington D.C.-area presence with the opening of a new office and demonstration center in Silver Spring, Maryland. The office will support customers whose programs are part of Harris' Civil Programs business unit. An open house for customers and employees was held today at the facility, which is located in the Silver Spring Metro Plaza at 8401 Colesville Road, Suite 610, Silver Spring, Maryland, 20910. Harris employs approximately 500 people located at various customer support offices throughout the Washington, D.C. area. "Harris is involved with several new programs and contract pursuits involving the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)," said Al Dukes, president, Civil Programs business unit, Harris Government Communications Systems Division (GCSD). "Establishing an office in close proximity to NOAA and NARA will enable us to rapidly and cost-effectively serve the needs of these valued customers and continue our focus on enhancing customer intimacy." Harris is currently engaged in a one-year study contract for NOAA for ground segment work supporting the advanced Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R (GOES-R) program. Under the GOES-R contract, Harris will study the application of its advanced ground data processing as well as its command and control technologies to the overall satellite ground system architecture, and provide end-to-end system integration solutions. The study contract was awarded through NOAA's National Environmental, Satellite, Data and Information Services (NESDIS) office, which manages the nation's operational environmental satellites, provides data and information services, and conducts related research. In addition, last month, Harris announced the formation of a team to compete for a contract to design, develop and operate the Electronic Record Archives (ERA) for the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The ERA system will enable NARA to authentically preserve and provide access to any kind of electronic record, free from dependency on any specific hardware or software.
