Harris Corporation Receives Frost & Sullivan 2005 Competitive
Strategy Leadership Award ROCHESTER, N.Y., April 20
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), a leading
supplier of secure, tactical radios for defense forces worldwide,
has been awarded the 2005 Competitive Strategy Leadership Award
from Frost & Sullivan. Harris was selected for its outstanding
performance in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) tactical
military communications market. Frost & Sullivan presents this
award each year to the company that has demonstrated significant
gains in the market due to its superior market strategy. According
to Frost & Sullivan, "Harris has executed an innovative
strategy within the existing competitive landscape, empowering the
company to overtake the competition. Its strategy of strengthening
its line of communication products by filling an immediate
operational need and participating in the development of the Joint
Tactical Radio System has paid off handsomely in the U.S.
government markets." "With this award, Frost & Sullivan has
recognized Harris' market strategy, which focuses on meeting the
evolving needs of our customers," said Dana Mehnert, vice president
and general manager of business development and operations, Harris
RF Communications Division. "We're proud to be supplying the
Falcon(R) II family of radios, which is flexible enough to meet the
needs of the warfighter today and engineered to meet their rapidly
changing requirements in the future." Commenting on Harris' recent
contract award for HF radios from the U.S. Marine Corps, Brad
Curran, Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst, says, "The
flexibility of the HF frequency spectrum gives maneuvering units
increased connectivity, especially since the satellite
communication channels are so congested. HF has the ability to
project over mountains and urban areas, bounce off the ionosphere,
and come back down, making it extremely useful for over-the-horizon
communications." Harris' AN/PRC-117F radio also is highly useful
for enabling access to a broad range of communication modes and can
replace several legacy line-of- sight and tactical satellite
communication radios. It is interoperable with current systems such
as HaveQuick, Single Channel Ground to Air Radio System (SINCGARS),
Satellite Communications, and Demand Assigned Multiple Access
(DAMA), with a Very High Frequency/Ultra High Frequency (VHF/UHF)
range of 30 MHz to 512 MHz. The Harris AN/PRC-117F can be utilized
in both wide and narrow bands. This flexibility helps military
teams to use it for a variety of communication needs, including
inter-team radio communications, which simplifies equipment and
battery requirements. "The 117F has the capability of a SINCGARS
radio, a UHF PRC-113 HaveQuick, and a DAMA radio with satellite
communications that go up to 56 kilobits in two different modes,"
observes Curran. "With U.S. forces moving toward the Joint Tactical
Radio System (JTRS), interim radios such as the AN/PRC-150 and 117F
are central to the process, and essential for continued operational
success," notes Curran. "They are now available with software
reprogrammable capabilities that bridge the gap between legacy and
new tactical military communication systems." Harris' participation
in JTRS development includes a significant role in the Cluster I
and Airborne Maritime Fixed (AMF) programs. Harris also has a
contract with the JTRS Joint Program Office for implementation of
COMSEC algorithms into the Harris high-performance Sierra(TM) II
programmable encryption module. Harris manpack radio equipment was
previously selected by the Joint Program Office under its Phase IIB
Software Communication Architecture (SCA) compliance testing to
validate waveforms under development. In addition, Harris has
developed a multiband handheld Intra/Inter Team Radio that is
undergoing National Security Agency (NSA) communications security
certification to meet the Software Defined Radio (SDR) needs of the
services for a JTRS-capable handheld radio. About Harris Harris RF
