Harris Corporation Leverages Transmission Leadership Into New Business Models for Mobile Video DVB-H Products and Demonstrations at NAB2005 Further Cement Harris As a Growing Force Globally for Total Content Delivery CINCINNATI, April 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation's (NYSE:HRS) Broadcast Communications Division will feature a live, end-to-end DVB-H demonstration in its booth during NAB2005. The Harris products offer a complete solution that will allow both domestic and international broadcasters to create content, move it through the production chain and deliver it to mobile devices such as cellular phones and similar devices. The content will represent typical live broadcast television programming as opposed to the short video clips that are the current standard in mobile video. "Harris' decades of terrestrial transmission experience and knowledge have been invaluable in expanding beyond our core business to make true mobile video a reality for consumers," said Dale Mowry, vice president and general manager of Harris Broadcast Communications Division's Television Broadcast Systems business unit. "Building on the coming implementation of our first international DVB-H trials, Harris also is establishing partnerships domestically that will lead to capabilities on all major mobile video platforms. We are confident our end-to-end solutions approach will advance mobile video far beyond its current capabilities." The demonstration will feature UDcast's multi-protocol encapsulator for data insertion, Harris' fully DVB-H compatible Synchrony SFN (Single Frequency Network) Adapter, and Harris' fully DVB-H compliant Atlas(TM) DTV660 transmitter. This NAB demonstration comes on the heels of two previous announcements that position Harris as an emerging leader in mobile video trials. In February, Harris announced its selection as the exclusive provider of transmission equipment for NTL Broadcast's DVB-H mobile video trials in the UK, and in early March came the news that Harris would supply transmission equipment and technical support to Sydney, Australia-based The Bridge Networks for a 12-month DVB-H trial. Both providers will use Harris Atlas(TM) DTV-660 transmitters for terrestrial delivery of multi-channel television to mobile receivers. DVB-H allows simultaneous transmission of multi-channel television, radio, video, audio and IP data to a range of multimedia receivers including cellular phones, PDAs, PCs and other handheld devices. DVB-H uses MPEG-4 AVC, Windows(R) Media 9, AAC and other advanced video coding and bandwidth- efficient compression technologies to deliver high-quality services to small- screen devices. In addition to DVB-H-based developments, Qualcomm has announced an $800 million investment in FLO(TM) modulation and a nationwide MediaFLO(TM) mobile video network using its newly developed standard that permits implementation of a broadcast mobile video network in conjunction with existing WCDMA and CDMA-EVDO cellular networks.
