Harris Corporation Completes Phase 1 of Nigeria's Largest Transmission Backbone for MTN - Phase 1 of the 3,400 km Y'hello Bahn Project is Nigeria's Largest Installed 4:1 Backbone - CANNES, France, 3GSM WORLD CONGRESS, HALL 6, ROOM N21, Feb. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), a leading global supplier of wireless equipment and services, has completed Phase 1 of the Y'hello Bahn transmission backbone project for MTN Nigeria, creating the largest installed 4:1 backbone in Nigeria. Harris' high-capacity microwave transmission backbone addresses the lack of reliable terrestrial transmission links, and will span 3,400 kilometres across Nigeria when complete. MTN Nigeria is West Africa's largest GSM operator, and more than 120 communities throughout the region are now linked by the Y'hello Bahn transmission backbone, including the major metropolitan areas of Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt. As construction continues, Harris will link many smaller villages for the first time, delivering voice and data connectivity for MTN Nigeria's growing customer base. Since Harris was awarded the contract in February 2004, MTN Nigeria's subscription numbers in Nigeria have increased dramatically, topping the three million mark in November 2004, up 87 percent from 2003. Network congestion levels are down significantly. "Our relationship with Harris has been key to our rapid growth in Nigeria," said Chris Serjent, chief head of Capital Group of MTN Nigeria responsible for all rollout and implementation activities. "Meeting the demand for GSM services in Nigeria is an ongoing challenge, and Harris' experience, innovative technology, and local knowledge have greatly enhanced our competitive position." "We're proud to be working with MTN Nigeria as it capitalizes on the huge growth opportunities in Nigeria," remarked Joseph Joseph, Harris Microwave Communications Division's managing director for Middle East and Africa. "Harris' microwave technology is providing MTN with the higher network capacity it needs and a lower cost alternative to existing satellite links." Harris recently announced a contract to extend MTN's coverage network with digital microwave radios from its TRuepoint(TM) family, a move which represents the largest telecommunications network expansion in Nigeria. Together the deals are valued at more than $65 million US. About MTN MTN Nigeria is Nigeria's largest GSM operator.
