MARKET OVERVIEW Overseas markets are not looking too promising this morning as just two of the 15 markets that we track are currently positive. The cumulative average return on the group stands at a minus 0.299 percent, weighed down by the 2.02 percent decline in the Nikkei. Traders came back from a one-day break, trading on concerns over China's ability to engineer a soft landing for a too rapidly expanding economy and the potential for an interest rate hike in the U.S. Additional pressure came from the fact that the Nikkei will resume the "Golden Week" holiday by closing on Monday through Wednesday. Traders felt it prudent to lock in profits ahead of the super long weekend. On the week the index lost 2.96 percent, but remains 10.16 percent higher in calendar year 2004. Before the start of the regular trading session today, March Personal Income is expected to have advanced by 0.4 percent, matching the rise of the prior month. The companion report, March Personal Spending is expected to have surged by 0.7 percent, belittling the prior month's 0.2 percent rise. At 9:45 a.m., the final University of Michigan Sentiment Index for April is expected to come in at 94.0. The preliminary report in April stood at 93.2, while the final March reading was 96.8. Recall that on Tuesday we learned that the Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index for April took a surprise turn higher to 92.9 versus the healthy reading of 88.5 posted in March. Possibly the most important report of the day will be released at 10:00 a.m. The April Chicago Purchasing Managers' Manufacturing Index is seen at 60.0, which would best the 57.6 reading in March. This report is key as it is thought to prognosticate the National Institute for Supply Managers Manufacturing (ISM) report (due for release on Monday) with a reasonable degree of reliability. After the controversial general election on March 20, the country will now conduct a full recount. The situation began with the assassination attempts on incumbent president Chen Shui-bian and his deputy just days before the vote. But Chen's Nationalist Party opponent, Lien Chan, then accused the president of faking the stunt to garner sympathy votes. Chen then scraped victory by just 30,000 votes out of 13 million cast after the government almost bungled the antimissile referendum. But a political storm swirled amid allegations that around 330,000 ballots were invalid. So now, Taiwan will recount all the votes on May 10, just before Chen is due to be sworn in again on May 20. Better news for Taiwan's flagship chip firm, Taiwan Semiconductor though. With plants operating at full capacity during the first quarter amid rising global demand, net income soared to T$18.8 billion (US$568.6 million) - the third highest on record - as sales jumped 46%. After spending $3.6 billion on new plants that produce chips on 12-inch wafers instead of the standard 8 inches, Taiwan Semi can now double the number of chips made...and has slashed production costs by one-third. And with global chip sales projected to grow 43% this year, the future looks bright. The editorial team has prepared a special FREE REPORT for you - "America's 1,300 Fastest-Growing Companies."
