Duckwall-ALCO Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq:DUCK) today announced that sales from continuing operations for the most recent fiscal five week period ending April 4, 2010, increased 2.5% to $43.5 million compared to $42.5 million in the prior-year month. Same-store sales were up 2.1%. 

Year-to-date sales increased 0.1% to $78.0 million compared to the prior-year $77.9 million, and same-store sales decreased 0.3%.

Rich Wilson, President and Chief Executive Officer, commented: "March same-store sales were positively impacted by the shift of Easter from the April period to the March period. In addition, we are encouraged by trends in our seasonal departments. Sales in Outdoor Living, Horticulture, Lawn and Garden and warm weather apparel have all responded positively. We are also experiencing better than expected results on our new 'Everyday Value' offering, a new Duckwall-ALCO initiative to better meet the everyday needs of our customers."

The Company's continued focus on inventory position is providing improved cash flow. This has resulted in a reduction of over $16.0 million in the revolver balance as of period-end April 4, 2010 when compared to the same period-end of the prior fiscal year. The revolver balance has been reduced by approximately $5.6 million since fiscal year-end January 31, 2010.
