Shell said a "compressor trip in a small unit" led to flaring Monday at its refinery in Martinez, Calif.

In a statement to the California Emergency Management Agency, the refinery said more than 500 pounds of sulfur dioxide were released. It said the incident happened early Monday morning and that it expected it to end soon.

The 160,000-barrel-a-day refinery is located about 30 miles northeast of San Francisco.
