International stocks trading in New York closed higher on Monday.

The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts rose 0.86% to 122.46. The European index climbed 0.97% to 119.86, the Asian index climbed 0.63% to 131.89, the Latin American index improved 0.59% to $176.05 and the emerging markets index increased 1.24% to 230.60.

Syngenta (SYNN.VX, SYT) The Swiss seed giant is being pursued by China National Chemical Corp., which bid $43 billion for the company. U.S. opposition to the largest-ever acquisition by a Chinese company is growing, however, with a top farm-state senator saying the takeover could pose risks to the security of America's food supply.

Telefonica (TEF) Telefónica SA Chairman and Chief Executive César Alierta is stepping down, capping nearly 16 years at the helm of the Spanish telecommunications giant where he oversaw a period of expansion followed by a more recent retrenchment as the firm grapples with a hefty debt load.

Abengoa (ABGB ABG.MC) as filed for bankruptcy protection in the U.S. as the Spanish energy company continues talks with its banks and bondholders to agree on its plan to restructure billions of dollars in debt. The renewable energy company, which operates around the world, on Monday night filed for chapter 15 protection, the section of the U.S. bankruptcy code dealing with cross-border insolvencies, in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del.
