Summit Medical Group renews Zix Email Encryption based on industry-leading technology and ZixCorp’s commitment to compliance with BAA

Zix® Email Encryption enables 1,500 Summit Medical Group employees to protect outbound email containing personal health information (PHI) and meet the regulatory requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act.

“We originally brought Zix Email Encryption on board in 2003 due to HIPAA compliance laws as they related to protecting PHI,” said Joseph L. Ortiz, chief information officer for Summit Medical Group. “We continue to use the service, because, quite frankly, it’s the best product out there.”

ZixCorp offers the industry’s only fully transparent delivery of encrypted email, which is appreciated by Summit Medical Group employees and recipients alike. With transparent email encryption, Summit Medical Group employees and any recipients using ZixGateway can exchange secure email as they would conventional email. More than 200 organizations exchange encrypted email with Summit Medical Group without taking any extra steps or entering passwords.

This has a minimal impact on both physician and employee workflows since no extra steps are required,” said Ortiz. “If you know you’re sending PHI, you can explicitly encrypt the email using the encryption button, but even if you don’t think about it, ZixGateway will still catch it and ensure the safekeeping of PHI.”

Another key factor in the renewal decision was ZixCorp’s participation in a business associate agreement (BAA), which outlines the protection of PHI in accordance with HIPAA. In total, ZixCorp has signed more than 600 BAAs, providing added reassurance to healthcare customers that patient privacy is protected.
