Zix Corporation (ZixCorp), (Nasdaq: ZIXI), a leader in email data protection, today announced that Innovative Care Management (ICM), a medical management company, has selected ZixCorp’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) solution, ZixOne, to grant employees secure access to corporate email on their personally owned devices. By accessing corporate email through ZixOne and not allowing that corporate data to reside on the device, ICM protects sensitive data in company email without hindering employee productivity.

“We used to only allow corporate email access from company-owned devices, because we were sensitive about the potential exposure of confidential medical information,” said Marion Shipley, chief operating officer for ICM. “We knew BYOD would positively affect our staff, but we couldn’t enable it without addressing the vulnerabilities associated with corporate email access on a personal device. ZixOne was an easy fix and alternative to traditional BYOD solutions.”

ICM provides ZixOne to all senior and mid-level employees, and the company is expanding its use to other employees who choose to use their personal devices for business purposes. To mitigate risks, if a device is ever lost or stolen, an ICM administrator can simply disable access to corporate email on that specific device through ZixOne, without impacting access to the employee’s other devices.

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act require that personal health information (PHI) is secure in transit and at rest. If a mobile device that contains PHI is lost or stolen, the organization is obligated to report the breach and take appropriate action to correct the violation, and it may also face penalties. Since ZixOne does not allow email data to reside on the device, it is not vulnerable to loss or theft.
