KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Aug. 5, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE)
-- Applied Science Products, Inc. ("Company")
(Pink Sheets:APLD), announced today that it was awarded two phase I
SBIR grants from U.S. Government agencies for projects utilizing
the company's patented atmospheric plasma technology. The first
grant, in the amount of $104,280 was awarded by the National
Science Foundation ("NSF") to its wholly-owned subsidiary Advanced
Plasma Products, Inc. and covers research into the decontamination
of fresh produce with atmospheric plasma. The second grant, in
the amount of $89,890 was awarded by the United States Department
of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture ("NIFA")
for research into sustainable nitric acid production using
non-thermal plasma.
Kenneth Wood, CEO of Applied Science Products, noted that "We're
very pleased with these grants which represent the first step in
developing additional potential commercial products. They also
demonstrate the versatility of our atmospheric plasma technology,
which can be used for a wide variety of disinfection, sterilization
and other commercial applications. Research under the NSF
grant will apply the use of a low temperature plasma
decontamination system to provide a novel means of reducing
microbial populations on fresh produce. Eliminating microbial
contamination can reduce food-borne illnesses and at the same time
extend the shelf life of the product. Research under the NIFA
grant will apply a novel approach to producing nitric acid, a key
component in nitrogen fertilizer, using our proprietary plasma
process to chemically activate nitrogen molecules found in
air. The objective is to develop an important new clean
technology for producing nitrogen fertilizer without the
requirement for a natural gas feedstock, thereby reducing the
agricultural impact on global warming and eliminating an important
source of price volatility in agricultural products."
The Company, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Advanced
Plasma Products, also manufactures and sells a state-of-the-art air
purifier, the TriClean Pro, and is completing development of a
chamber disinfection product for use in pneumatic waste movement
systems used in hospitals and high rise residential
buildings. The TriClean Pro has been engineered to provide
superior air cleaning performance in a portable unit that can be
easily moved from one location to another. Its "capture and
destroy" approach using the company's proprietary plasma technology
will kill 99.999% of trapped bacteria and viruses, and 99.99% of
hard to destroy bacterial endospore microorganisms. The
TriClean Pro can provide a targeted approach to help address
airborne contamination in locations such as healthcare facilities,
including hospitals, doctors' offices, and nursing home/assisted
living facilities, athletic locker rooms, corporate offices, day
care centers, veterinary and kennel facilities, schools, hotels and
motels, and mold contaminated buildings. The company's first
chamber disinfection product is expected to be installed in a
hospital waste movement system before the end of the current
quarter for final test and performance verification.
