The May Department Stores Company Announces Promotion of Jeffrey A. Kantor ST. LOUIS, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The May Department Stores Company (NYSE:MAY) today announced the promotion of Jeffrey A. Kantor to president and chief executive officer of the Hecht's/Strawbridge's division, located in Washington, D.C. Mr. Kantor succeeds Frank J. Guzzetta, effective Nov. 1, 2004. Mr. Guzzetta, as previously announced, is joining Marshall Field's Nov. 1, 2004, and will become president and chief executive officer of Marshall Field's, effective Jan. 1, 2005. John T. Harper continues as chairman of Hecht's/Strawbridge's. "Jeff is a talented and accomplished retail executive with more than 23 years in the industry," said Gene S. Kahn, May's chairman and chief executive officer. "His extensive experience will help provide a smooth transition, and I'm confident that Jeff and John will make a great team in Washington." William P. McNamara, May's vice chairman, said, "Jeff has a proven track record as an innovative manager, a dynamic merchant, and a strong leader. He will be a great addition to the highly respected Hecht's/Strawbridge's organization." Mr. Kantor, 45, joined May in 1981 as an assistant buyer for the Boston- based Filene's division. He held numerous positions prior to being promoted to divisional merchandise manager in 1989, and subsequently was named division vice president of men's furnishings and clothing in 1992. He was promoted to vice president and assistant to the president in 1995. Mr. Kantor later became senior vice president, general merchandise manager in 1997 for men's, young men's, and boys, and also assumed responsibility for cosmetics in 2000. Earlier this year, Mr. Kantor began overseeing cosmetics, accessories, dresses, suits, intimate apparel, and hosiery at the Filene's/Kaufmann's division. A native of Belmont, Mass., Mr. Kantor received a B.A. degree in business administration from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He and his wife, Raelin, have three children. The May Department Stores Company currently operates 498 department stores under the names of Famous-Barr, Filene's, Foley's, Hecht's, Kaufmann's, Lord & Taylor, L.S.
