The May Department Stores Company Announces Retirement of Filene's/Kaufmann's Chairman William K. Gingerich and Promotion of Michael J. Geraghty ST. LOUIS, Oct. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The May Department Stores Company (NYSE:MAY) today announced the retirement of William K. Gingerich, chairman of its Filene's/Kaufmann's department store division headquartered in Boston. His retirement is effective Oct. 31, 2004. Michael J. Geraghty, currently executive vice president of finance and merchandise information systems at Filene's/Kaufmann's, succeeds Mr. Gingerich. Thomas A. Kingsbury continues as president and chief executive officer of Filene's/Kaufmann's. "Bill Gingerich has had a distinguished 20-year career with May," said John L. Dunham, May's president. "His contributions and accomplishments on behalf of May have been substantial. His leadership and business insights will be missed by his associates and peers throughout the company." "Bill Gingerich, Tom Kingsbury, and Mike Geraghty have been part of a powerful senior management team at Filene's/Kaufmann's," said William P. McNamara, May's vice chairman. "Mike has a proven record of success as a manager and leader. His 22 years of experience with May and his extensive experience at Filene's/Kaufmann's will help provide a smooth management transition for this very important position." Mr. Geraghty, 55, joined May in 1980 as vice president of credit and customer service at May's former May Company, California division and in 1983 was named controller. In 1985 he was named senior vice president of finance for the former G. Fox division. In 1992 Mr. Geraghty was named Filene's vice president of credit and operations and in 1996 was named regional vice president of May's credit center in St. Louis. Later in 1996 he was promoted to senior vice president of finance for Filene's and was named to his current position at Filene's/Kaufmann's earlier this year. A native of New York City, Mr. Geraghty received a BBA degree in finance from Iona College and an MBA degree from St. John's University. He and his wife Carol have two grown children. Mr. Gingerich, 55, joined May in 1984 as controller for the former Strouss division in Youngstown, Ohio. In 1986 he was named controller for Kaufmann's in Pittsburgh, was promoted to senior vice president of finance in 1990, and was named senior vice president and assistant to the president of Kaufmann's in 1994. Mr. Gingerich was named chairman of Kaufmann's in 1999 and became chairman of the Filene's/Kaufmann's division in 2002. Mr. Gingerich is originally from Akron, Ohio. He and his wife Nancy have two grown children.
