Providing a Holistic View HOUSTON, May 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
BMC Software, Inc. (NYSE:BMC), a leading provider of enterprise
management solutions, today expanded its commitment to the PATROL
product line by announcing BMC Performance Manager, the next
generation of PATROL. An innovative end-to-end systems management
solution, BMC Performance Manager provides the functionality
required to diagnose complex problems while being simple to deploy,
install and use, enabling companies to improve business
performance, optimize system resources and reduce costs by shifting
focus from maintenance and operations to more value-added tasks.
Available now, BMC Performance Manager delivers immediate benefits
and long-term investment protection for new and existing PATROL
users. BMC Performance Manager supports the Infrastructure and
Application Management Route-To-Value, the foundation of BMC
Software's Business Service Management (BSM) strategy. Bob
Beauchamp, president and CEO, BMC Software said, "This announcement
is a significant milestone in our BSM strategy and builds on our
proven expertise and years of innovation. The systems management
market has evolved, with basic monitoring capabilities reaching
maturity and customers demanding more intuitive, high-value
solutions. BMC Performance Manager is an architectural evolution
driven by customers that reaffirms our commitment to our large user
community, reinvigorates our systems management product portfolio,
and enhances our competitive advantage." BMC Performance Manager
Provides a Single View The first BMC Performance Manager release,
BMC Performance Manager Portal, available today, is a Web-based
unified management console that includes the BMC Impact Portal. The
BMC Performance Manager Portal provides a visual integration
between PATROL, PATROL Express, and BMC Service Impact Manager,
giving users a holistic view of their IT infrastructure. This
integration demonstrates BMC Software's commitment towards unifying
consoles across solutions through BMC Atrium View, part of the BMC
Atrium technology strategy for enabling BSM. By consolidating
reporting and notification and allowing users to easily switch
between infrastructure and business views, BMC Performance Manager
Portal enables customers to more readily identify issues and fix
them before there is any impact on their business. "The BMC
Performance Manager Portal allows us to see critical infrastructure
management information in a single pane of glass. This makes it
easy for administrators to monitor multiple BMC Software solutions
quickly and efficiently in one easy-to-read dashboard," said Jeremy
Faircloth, Applications Administration manager, EchoStar
Communications Corporation. "The ability to personalize our
dashboard with the information that is most critical to our
business allows us to focus on those areas that are important to
our customers instead of a myriad of alerts on non-critical
issues." Reaffirming BMC Software's commitment to the large and
growing PATROL user community, BMC Performance Manager Portal has
been designed to allow complete operational compatibility with
previous versions of PATROL, PATROL Knowledge Modules, PATROL
Express, and BMC Service Impact Manager under a unified single
view. By eliminating the requirement for multiple consoles for
environments utilizing several generations of PATROL technology,
BMC Performance Manager Portal greatly simplifies the management of
large, complex computing environments. This capability, coupled
with the portal technology, delivers customizable user views that
incorporate additional information from other management tools,
enterprise applications, and web sources into extensible business
dashboards. Also with this delivery, BMC Software has enhanced
PATROL Express with expanded support for applications including
Apache Web Server, Compaq Insight Manager, Dell OpenManage, BEA
WebLogic, IBM WebSphere, JBoss and SAP in addition to providing
support for monitoring via SNMP traps and Telnet. Other new
features in this release include customizable monitoring via secure
shell commands or JMX, improved reporting and alerting
capabilities, and more flexibility in supporting multiple users.
BMC Performance Manager Delivers a Single License BMC Performance
Manager solutions will be rolled out globally in June via a
consolidated license structure that combines both PATROL and PATROL
Express technologies together in a single offering. This single
license structure provides transferability between platform and
function, allowing users to choose which technology to exploit on
what platform and make adjustments as their business needs change.
As a result, users have their management capabilities delivered
within a single simplified license. By combining a single license
structure with the single view provided by BMC Performance Manager
Portal, users gain a double benefit: streamlined system management
operations and the ability to flexibly deploy the appropriate level
of management technology to adapt to changing business needs. BMC
Performance Manager Exploits a Single Architecture An integrated
solution that combines the robustness of agent-based PATROL classic
with the ease of use and simplicity of agent-less PATROL Express,
BMC Performance Manager significantly reduces the total cost of
systems management ownership while improving system performance
through flexibility that enables the technology to grow and change
with business needs. This innovative management approach utilizes a
policy-based deployment mechanism that automatically employs the
appropriate level of management technology based on a user's goals.
The inherent intelligence removes the requirement for an IT manager
to decide which management technology to deploy, agent-based or
agent-less, allowing them to shift their focus to the desired
outcome instead, a basic tenet of BSM. This business-focused
approach leverages proven technology to eliminate deployment
issues, simplify administration, and reduce the infrastructure
required to deliver the robust and flexible functionality necessary
to manage large, complex heterogeneous environments. The
consolidated packages available now form the basis for ongoing
value and functionality that will be delivered to PATROL and PATROL
Express users. Upcoming BMC Performance Manager releases planned
for delivery in calendar 2005 will enhance integration with partner
solutions and third-party management solutions. Additional releases
combining PATROL and PATROL Express technologies into a single
integrated architecture will expand diagnostic and recovery
capabilities while continuing to reduce up-front configuration and
deployment costs. "IT managers today are forced to choose between
two disparate technologies when evaluating systems management
solutions -- those that provide lightweight monitoring only and are
simple to administer -- or those that deliver robust management but
require additional time and resources to operate. These decisions
lock an IT organization into a specific technology that does not
grow with their business or change with their business needs," said
Mary Smars, vice president and general manager, Distributed Systems
Management, BMC Software. "BMC Performance Manager changes this
paradigm by combining agent-less and agent-based technologies
together to enable streamlined systems management for our
customers." BMC Performance Manager Protects Existing Investments
BMC Performance Manager upgrades existing PATROL and PATROL Express
installations and protects an existing investment in those
technologies. This upgrade approach simplifies deployment as no
migration is required to enable the new functionality. In addition,
by leveraging the existing infrastructure, existing PATROL and
PATROL Express products retain their viability until upgraded. At
no point in time do existing PATROL and PATROL Express solutions
become obsolete in relation to use with BMC Performance Manager. In
addition, BMC Performance Manager retains the existing integrations
to other BMC Software and third-party products currently available
in both PATROL and PATROL Express, thus ensuring a strong
foundation for BSM. About BMC Software BMC Software, Inc.
