Barcelona Needs to Become Bar-smallcell-ona to Support World-Class Mobile Broadband

Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MSPD) has revealed
that the city of Barcelona will need approximately 40,000 small
cells by the year 2015 in order to offer genuinely world-class,
ubiquitous long-term evolution (LTE) mobile broadband service.
These findings are based on similar analysis reported by Picochip
Ltd. in 2011, which showed that London would require 70,000 small
cells with more than ten million needed worldwide.
“People now recognize that small cells are essential if LTE is
to deliver on its potential, and Barcelona is almost the perfect
example of a city designed for small cells,” said Doug Pulley,
chief technology officer, wireless and customer premises equipment
(CPE), at Mindspeed. “Barcelona, the perennial host of the world’s
largest mobile communications technology conference, is a
sophisticated city with a lot of people using smartphones and
tablets, and it is a very ‘digital’ city with above average usage.
However, the population density is very high and there are many
architecturally wonderful buildings with thick walls and lots of
attenuation. Many buildings are tall, relative to street width,
creating ‘urban canyons.’ These factors combined make deploying
networks to increase capacity a real challenge – but our model
suggests that by the year 2015, 40,000 small cells will give
Barcelona ‘best of breed’ wireless broadband.”
These small cells would be split between retail locations (from
large shopping centers down to smaller coffee shops); enterprises,
including large office blocks; nearly 7,000 ‘outdoor’ metropolitan
small cells; and almost 1,000 additional small cells to cover the
metro area. In 2011 Barcelona, the home to Mobile World Congress,
was named the Mobile World Capital by the GSM Association
(GSMA).
