Valero Energy Corp. (VLO) reported above-normal emissions caused
by a rainstorm over the weekend at its refinery in Corpus Christi,
Texas.
"During a rain event, a loss of containment occurred at a
waste-water storage tank due to a faulty level indicator. This
resulted in reportable air emissions," the refinery said in a
statement to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. "The
issue was identified and flow was switched to another tank."
It said the emissions included 158,000 pounds of "unspecified
VOCs," or volatile organic compounds and lasted for less than an
hour on Saturday.
The 293,000-barrel-a-day Corpus Christi refinery includes an
East and West plant, and this incident happened at the West
plant.
