MELBOURNE, Fla., June 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris
Corporation (NYSE: HRS), an international communications and
information technology company, was honored with a Stevie® Award in
the category Communications or PR Campaign of the Year –
Community Relations for its 2009 United Way campaign. In
addition, the company's corporate responsibility program, "A
Trusted Neighbor," was a finalist in the category Corporate
Social Responsibility Program of the Year – More than 2,500
Employees.
More than 2,700 entries from organizations of all sizes and in
virtually every industry were submitted for consideration in more
than 40 categories. The winners were announced June 21 during the American Business Awards
dinner in New York City.
The 2009 Harris United Way campaign raised more than
$1.2 million for the Brevard County, Florida community, where the
company is headquartered, and more than $330,000 for other communities across the U.S.
where the company has operations. Harris augmented this through an
initiative where additional support for basic needs programs was
triggered by reaching pre-set milestones in United Way donations.
A Harris "CANthropy" competition among employees also
resulted in nearly 10,000 cans and other food items being
donated.
The company's Trusted Neighbor program encompasses a variety of
philanthropic efforts. These include the Harris Foundation,
which contributed more than $4.3
million to charitable and educational organizations in
fiscal year 2009. In addition, Harris employees donated more
than 54,000 volunteer hours to help strengthen the quality of life
in the countries and communities where Harris has operations.
"The annual United Way campaign is our company's largest and
longest-running fundraising program, as it provides a broad
distribution of services through many individual agencies," said
Jeff Shuman, senior vice president,
Human Resources and Corporate Relations. "It's an honor to be
recognized by other business professionals for our efforts in
this area and also for our overall corporate responsibility
program."
