Named One of Top Companies for Getting Most Financial Return on
R&D Spending MELBOURNE, Fla., March 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/
-- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications
and information technology company, has been recognized by
technology consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton for its innovation
and the strong financial return that it receives from its research
and development initiatives. Harris was named a 'High-Leverage
Innovator' in the consulting firm's special report, titled "The
Customer Connection: The Global Innovation 1000." Harris was
identified as one of the top 118 companies for 2007 that
"consistently reap the greatest financial reward for every dollar
they spend on R&D." High-leverage innovators were measured on a
variety of performance indicators, such as sales growth, gross
profit growth, gross profit, operating profit growth, operating
profit, market cap growth, and total shareholder return -- while
maintaining a lower R&D-to-sales ratio than their industry
medians. According to the study, innovators often shared two
characteristics: strategic alignment and customer focus. In 2007,
Harris conducted $924 million in government and internally funded
R&D. The company significantly increased its R&D
initiatives during the past five years -- more than doubling its
investment in internal initiatives. These initiatives increase the
flow of new products that enable the company to enter new markets,
gain market share, and establish new capabilities to win
significant positions on government programs. The effort has paid
strong dividends for Harris, with the percentage of the company's
revenue from new products increasing from 15 percent to more than
35 percent in the last three years alone. "We are extremely proud
to be honored as an innovator by a prestigious firm such as Booz
Allen Hamilton," said Kent Buchanan, Harris chief technology
officer and vice president of engineering for its Government
Communications Systems segment. "Research and development is the
engine that is driving growth across our commercial and government
businesses. We carefully focus our R&D spending, and look for
commonalities across the business, then make fewer -- but bigger --
investments in those areas. Harris R&D programs also are
strongly customer focused and leveraged in those areas we have
identified as key to future growth." About Harris Corporation
