Leading chipmaker Broadcom Corporation (BRCM)
recently stated that it has integrated Community Wi-Fi software on
all DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem and gateway platforms and has become the
first semiconductor company to do so.
This new cable modem platform from Broadcom will enable
operators to have networks of hot spots without deploying new
equipments. Community Wi-Fi can transform residential Wi-Fi modems
and gateways into hot spots which subsequently provide cable
subscribers quick Wi-Fi connections on the move.
Broadcom’s Community Wi-Fi software also supports multi-mode
connect to operator hot spot infrastructure along with increased
authorization and accounting messaging.
Earlier, Broadcom launched the industry’s first
System-on-a-Chip (SoC) device with the potential of 5G
WiFi.
These chips facilitate the fastest and most reliable Gigabit
connectivity for home and small/medium business (SMB)
networks.
These new SoCs from Broadcom combine a high performance
processor, Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switch, GbE physical layer
transceivers (PHYs), USB 3.0 and traffic accelerators all on a
single chip.
Broadcom is well positioned in the fast growing wired and
wireless communications markets, and provides cutting-edge
solutions for a growing number of connected users, who are
demanding more content and bandwidth.
These chips will complement the company’s wide range of 5G
WiFi 802.11ac solutions. With the ever-growing demand for wireless
connectivity ubiquitously, there is increasing reliance on wireless
networks, which in turn, stresses the legacy 802.11a/b/g/n
networks. The new 5G WiFi enables mobile device users to stream
digital content faster, and simultaneously connect more wireless
devices to home and enterprise networks, while conserving battery
power.
Skyworks Solutions Inc. (SWKS) also announced
that it commenced volume production of several high performance RF
solutions, which are expected to support Broadcom‘s 5G WiFi chips.
These also include minicards for access points, routers and
customer premise equipment.
We continue to maintain a Neutral recommendation on Broadcom
Corporation. Our recommendation is supported by a Zacks #3 Rank,
which translates into a short-term rating of Hold.
