Power IT Down Day sponsors Citrix Systems, Inc., HP, Intel and GTSI announced today that the fourth annual public sector energy conservation event will be held on Friday, August 26, 2011. Power IT Down Day encourages individuals within civilian and military agencies, and the industries that serve them, to power down their computers, printers, monitors and other peripherals at the end of the work day to help the government reduce its energy consumption.

Participants register for the virtual event at www.powerITdown.org. As in years past, event sponsors will make a donation to Wounded Warrior Project to highlight how energy savings can be put to good use. In total, Power IT Down Day has donated more than $100,000 to Wounded Warrior Project since the inaugural event in 2008.

In 2010, the first year in which Power IT Down Day was held on a Friday, the event had 17,639 participants — more than three times the number of participants in 2009 — with a whopping two-thirds of these individuals coming from federal, state and local government. Event organizers hope to build on that success to help even more individuals achieve healthy energy habits. For 2011, Power IT Down Day’s website includes an updated calculation for determining the amount of energy saved when individuals power down their office equipment.

Quotes

Tom Simmons, area vice president – US Public Sector at Citrix

“We tripled the number of Power IT Down Day participants in 2010 to over 17,000, with more than two-thirds coming from government. That’s just a drop in the bucket, because both government and industry continue to take notice. We are proud that Power IT Down Day has become a valuable resource for ways government can reduce its carbon footprint every day of the year.”

Nigel Ballard, director of federal marketing, Intel Americas

“Every year, Power IT Down Day grows in both size and awareness. This shows me that you just can’t keep a great idea quiet. Seventeen thousand people signed up last year, and this time around we’re hoping for even greater participation. So please pledge to be part of the solution in 2011.”

Tom Hempfield, vice president, HP’s U.S. Federal Business Organization

“As a company committed to reducing energy use and emissions throughout the global economy, HP is proud to participate as a sponsor of the fourth annual Power IT Down Day. We encourage responsible energy consumption not only on August 26th but every day.”

Mohamed Elrefai, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing Operations, GTSI

“Our sponsorship of Power IT Down Day is a reflection of our commitment both as a company and as individuals to our nation’s efforts to reduce energy waste. We’re encouraging our government clients and our partners in industry to join us in pledging to shut down the electronics when the workday is over. The savings could be immense – and put to better use, like donating to Wounded Warrior Project.”
