United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS) on Wednesday said it will invest about $1.4 billion in an expansion of its operations in Pennsylvania, creating 1,700 new jobs.

The Atlanta package-delivery giant said the expansion is part of its plans to add more than 5 million square feet of new highly automated package-processing capacity globally this year.

UPS said it will open a new "super hub" in the state capital of Harrisburg, along with highly automated package operations in Carlisle, Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia.

The company currently has more than 19,000 employees in Pennsylvania.
