A measurement of general business conditions in New York state
fell slightly in November from a month ago but stayed positive.
The general business conditions indicator from the Empire State
Manufacturing Survey was 2.9 for November, down from 4 last
month.
Feelings from survey respondents were mixed. The survey said
that 28% said conditions got better. Twenty-six percent said the
opposite.
The indicators for shipments and prices paid fell but were
positive, and the new orders indicator rose. The indicator for
unfilled orders improved but stayed negative and the indicators for
delivery time and inventories both worsened and were still
negative.
The indicator measuring number of employees rose but the one
measuring average employee workweek declined. Both were
positive.
The indicator measuring general business conditions expectations
six months out rose to 19.4 from 17.1. Most of the future
indicators improved, with the gauge for future technology spending
up to 15.1 from 8.8 and the indicator measuring future capital
expenditures rising to 19.2 from 8.8. The future indicator for
unfilled orders also jumped to 4.8 from a negative reading of
5.6.
