Charity' Donates More Than $90,000 in Cash and Computer Equipment
to Schools and Non-Profits Race Pitted 30 Media in Race That
Contributed More Than One Million Dollars in Donations to Date PORT
WASHINGTON, N.Y., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Systemax , and
AMD today announced that the Seventh Annual "Build Your Own PC Race
For Charity" at Comdex 2003, hosted by Tiger Direct, raised over
$90,000 in cash and computer equipment donations for schools and
non-profit organizations. This year's event was held on November
18th at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas, and pitted 30 top technology
journalists from major media outlets including CNBC, PC World,
Network World and PC Magazine in a race to determine who could
assemble one of Systemax's state-of-the-art computers with an AMD
Athlon(TM) 64 processor in the fastest time. Over the course of its
seven-year history, the event has now raised more than one million
dollars in cash and computer equipment for needy schools and
organizations. Systemax and AMD donated the computers used in the
contest to schools and non-profit organizations designated by the
participants, and Systemax also made $13,500 in cash donations to
the charitable organizations chosen by the top three winners. The
first place winner was Charlie Demerjian of The Inquirer, who
assembled his PC in just over seven minutes. He designated Wingspan
Life Resources as the recipient of his computer and the $10,000
first prize cash donation. Robert Squires of AMDZone finished
second and selected Pleasanton Unified School District PTA to
receive $2,500 cash donation, and Christopher Null from Mobile PC
finished third and selected Quail Valley Elementary to receive a
