MELBOURNE, Fla., April 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --Harris
Corporation (NYSE: HRS), an international communications and
information technology company, was awarded the 2010 Golden Torch
Award for Corporate Community Service by the National Society of
Black Engineers (NSBE). It was presented this month in
Toronto during the NSBE's 36th
annual convention.
The award recognizes the company's investment in the
African-American community such as leading neighborhood development
programs; demonstrating support of science, technology, engineering
and math fields; and encouraging careers in engineering and the
sciences.
"Harris Corporation believes our commitment to building,
maintaining and expanding a globally inclusive culture is central
to our organization's ongoing success," said Jeff Shuman, vice president, Human Resources and
Corporate Relations, Harris Corporation. "Support for quality
education, with an emphasis on math and science, is our primary
philanthropic platform. We believe that excellence in
education is key to developing the minds and character of future
Harris employees and community leaders, and is vital to our
nation's technological advantage. We are honored to receive this
award from the NSBE."
Harris has strong partnerships with community organizations that
sponsor programs benefiting underprivileged, minority youth.
The company was a major supporter of the Brevard Neighborhood Development Coalition's
capital campaign to build a new, 3,300-square-foot outreach center
for children and youth in the Booker T. Washington neighborhood.
Another community initiative supported by Harris and its
employees is Club Esteem, a unique after-school program that helps
inspire economically disadvantaged youth to embrace the highest
standards of academic and personal excellence and helps prepare
them for a successful future.
Harris also provides significant financial support to education
at the university level and supports many minority engineering
programs and organizations at universities where it actively
recruits. The company has a long-standing relationship with
the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical
University (FAMU), the only historically black university in
the 11-member State University System of Florida. Harris provided endowment
funding to form the Harris-FAMU Life Gets Better Scholarship, which
was awarded for the first time last spring.
