Hyzon
Oct 22, 2024, 07:30 ET

First-Ever Fuel Cell Refuse Vehicle Order in North America

BOLINGBROOK, Ill., Oct. 22, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyzon (NASDAQ: HYZN) (Hyzon or the Company), a U.S.-based high-performance hydrogen fuel cell system manufacturer and technology developer focused on providing zero-emission power to decarbonize the most demanding industries, today announced it has entered into a purchase agreement for North America's first 12 hydrogen-powered refuse Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) with recycling and innovation pioneer GreenWaste®, contingent upon Hyzon meeting certain commercial terms and specifications as defined in the agreement.

Hyzon has secured North America’s first order for hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric refuse trucks from waste industry pioneer GreenWaste. The truck, developed in partnership with New Way Trucks, is shown during its trial recently in San Jose, Calif.
Hyzon has secured North America’s first order for hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric refuse trucks from waste industry pioneer GreenWaste. The truck, developed in partnership with New Way Trucks, is shown during its trial recently in San Jose, Calif.
"We are proud to partner with sustainability leader GreenWaste in this landmark agreement, as it represents a significant leap forward in transforming trucking in the waste industry through both Hyzon's leading Class 8 tractor and refuse collection vehicles," said Hyzon Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Parker Meeks. "It is clear hydrogen-powered refuse collection demand is growing, powered by Hyzon's high-performance hydrogen fuel cells. Our technology offers a compelling value proposition to our customers, providing zero-emission power necessary to meet the demanding challenges of refuse trucks, ensuring they perform day in and day out," added Meeks.

The company also recently announced the Start of Production (SOP) of its revolutionary single-stack 200kW Fuel Cell System (FCS), which enables Hyzon to manufacture standardized FCSs at volume for commercial sale, further accelerating the decarbonization of heavy-duty industries.

Hyzon's FCEVs are the first hydrogen-powered refuse collection FCEVs available for trial and purchase in North America, and GreenWaste is set to make history as the first company in North America to commercially operate them, continuing their commitment to sustainability leadership in the waste industry. The hydrogen-powered refuse collection FCEVs produce zero tailpipe emissions, supporting GreenWaste's broader sustainability initiatives, including its 2030 goal to achieve a 45% reduction in total combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions from its 2022 baseline. In 2023, GreenWaste achieved a 36.3% reduction in total combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions from its 2022 baseline.

The purchase agreement comes on the back of GreenWaste's trial of Hyzon's refuse FCEV, where it successfully completed several trial routes throughout the Bay Area, testing for payload, can-lifts and range.

"Seven years ago, GreenWaste made history by commercially operating the world's first full-sized electric side-loading waste collection truck. Today, we are building on that legacy with our plan to be the first in North America to introduce hydrogen-powered zero emissions vehicles into our collection fleet," said Tracy Adams, CEO of GreenWaste. "For decades, we have been at the forefront of innovative and sustainable resource recovery and recycling. This latest investment in zero-emission technology reinforces our leadership within the industry and commitment to recovering, recycling, and reusing waste materials in the most innovative, environmentally responsible, and reliable ways possible," he added.

Hyzon's refuse collection FCEVs will be built in partnership between Hyzon and New Way Trucks, a privately held, industry-leading refuse truck body manufacturer. New Way's expertise and leadership in refuse collection and Hyzon's focus on providing zero-emission power to decarbonize the most demanding industries combine to make hydrogen fuel cell electric refuse collection a reality for the North American waste and recycling industry.

"New Way is excited to be working with GreenWaste to introduce the first-ever commercial application of hydrogen powered refuse collection in North America. GreenWaste has been a long-time, valued New Way partner and, together with Hyzon, we are making the biggest steps forward to decarbonize the solid waste industry — with no compromise on range or dependency on the grid," said Don Ross, Chief Sales Officer for New Way, and Chairman of the National Waste and Recycling Association. "We look forward to continuing our partnership with Hyzon and fielding more zero emissions, clean energy refuse vehicle solutions that will set a new standard for our industry."

Refuse FCEV deliveries are expected to GreenWaste starting as soon as Q4 2025.

Seems my post was posted twice (iHUB UI team are horrible ) so let me edit it to add
Hyzon may have found a good niche here as the cost o f trash trucks is already much higher than say class 8 (NKLA) and the difference for the fuel cell transmission is thus less of an issue. add subsidies and they should be near comparable pricing.
The 200kW cell may also be a game changer in costs. Going to take much closer look at their financials moving forward

I was surprised to see my trash collected last week by an electric collection truck (in Northern Virginia). The dog still barked as if it were diesel though

Slowly but surely things are changing - but its painful watching companies having to scrape by to innovate and change the world.

Today's positive price action might have to do with this recently passed California Bill.

Assembly Bill No. 1921
CHAPTER 556
An act to amend Section 25741 of the Public Resources Code, relating to energy.
Approved by Governor September 25, 2024. Filed with Secretary of State September 25, 2024
https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB1921

Relevant quotes:

"This bill would revise the definition of “renewable electrical generation facility” to include a facility that uses fuel cells or linear generators that use specified fuels."

"The facility uses biomass, solar thermal, photovoltaic, wind, geothermal, fuel cells or linear generators using fuels described in this paragraph that otherwise meet the requirements of this subdivision, small hydroelectric generation of 30 megawatts or less, digester gas, municipal solid waste conversion, landfill gas, ocean wave, ocean thermal, or tidal current, and any additions or enhancements to the facility using that technology."

US Army gives thrilling inside look at groundbreaking new rescue truck: 'Your vehicle is your power generator'
August 26, 2024
https://autos.yahoo.com/us-army-gives-thrilling-inside-104547509.html

The U.S. Army has been showing off the prototype of its new H2Rescue truck that runs on hydrogen fuel and can go 1,500 miles before it needs a refill, CleanTechnica reported.

It all began five years ago when teams were brainstorming solutions to improve the Army's emergency response capabilities. It's all part of the force's 2022 Climate Strategy, which it says starts with fielding hybrid tactical vehicles by 2035 and aims to shift to fully electric ones by 2050.

While it may look like a fancy box truck, there's a lot going on under the hood. It boasts an electric drivetrain, a hydrogen fuel cell, storage for up to 176 kilograms of hydrogen, and high-density lithium-ion batteries.

The truck can become an on-site hub during emergencies, providing 25 kilowatts of export power — enough for around 20 homes — for 72 hours, according to the DHS. It also factors in enough to run its own systems, offering cooling or warming for those in need or serving as a mobile command center.

The Army report says that hydrogen fuel cells only emit water and air as byproducts, and a single fuel up can provide between 200 and 400 gallons of water as a byproduct. Right now, it can only be used for washing, but the goal is to upgrade it with a filtering system to make potable water.

"California wildfires [were] going out west, there were a couple of hurricanes in the southeast and we knew that big swaths of the U.S. were having these natural disasters [and] that customers didn't have power, water and were just devastated," Nicholas Josefik, technical lead on the project, shared in the report.

The H2Rescue vehicle is one step in the right direction for the environment. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, passenger vehicles, like cars and trucks, are responsible for around 41% of planet-warming carbon emissions in the U.S. by burning dirty fuels

Trucks, an Army mainstay, may only represent 4% by vehicle type, but they produce 23% of the emissions in that grouping, the Army reports. By using cleaner hydrogen, it's estimated that the H2Rescue could conserve around 1,825 gallons of dirtier fuel and reduce emissions by 2.5 metric tons annually.

It's also beneficial for rescue workers and those in need on disaster sites to have as much clean air as possible. Diesel generators, the current go-to for power generation in those situations, aren't doing anyone any favors. Plus, the new rescue vehicle runs nearly silent, reducing noise pollution.

The supply chain for hydrogen fuel is still developing, so to be safe, the Army is also developing a mobile hydrogen generator that just needs water and electricity to produce the fuel. However, some factories are already producing clean hydrogen through renewable sources like solar and wind.

The Army will continue demonstrating the H2Rescue throughout the year, showing that this one hybrid truck can replace generators, fuel tankers, and a gas-guzzling support vehicle.

As Josefik explained, "Instead of having to bring in those three different pieces of equipment, now you drive your vehicle to the location and your vehicle is your power generator."

Hey Banger - I have never met an investor who takes his gains from investments in Blue Chip, best in breed stocks, and throws his money away on junk stocks like HYZN, BLDP and PLUG.

Most wise investors take their gains and buy and hold best in breed and blue chips, which also pay healthy dividends. It says something when LIN, APD and NextEra are close to 100+ year highs, and HYZN, BLDP and PLUG are close to or at their all time lows.

For me, I take the gains I have made shorting badly run alt fuel companies like PLUG, FCEL and HYZN, and invest these gains in LIN, APD, JM and NextEra.

And as for the cash strapped, struggling messes like FCEL, Hyzn and PLUG, you say are nimble ? How good is HYZN as an investment when it has never made a penny in profit ? And you think HYZN is a BUY ? What BUY Signal for HYZN have you seen ?

How nimble is PLUG when they have to wait for months for a government backed loan in order that they can try to build some infrastructure.

Chevron, Cummins, NextEra, LIN and others can cash flow their capital projects without having to dilute or add debt.

And if one of the pturds ever takes off, I am close enough to catch most of the upside, without risking any of my blue chip money in the meantime.

Banger - That's where we differ.

I take all of my profits from shorting PLUG, Hyzon, and Ballard, et al and invest that money into real companies like LINDE , APD and Cummins.

Hey Jack
to be in hydrogen you can have a “balanced” portfolio

I am in Linde and Cummins (and Air products) as the established market players, but they are being challenged by more nimble and more risk tolerant companies where there is more money to be made (and yes lost)

From an investing point of view the “big gains” are in the emerging smaller companies. like NKLA, HYZN, etc for trucks and Ballard Bloom, FCEL and PLUG for more generic Fuel cell and hydrogen generation

Using Crossing the chasm to assess individual companies and Gorilla Game for how to play an emerging market with multiple players you don't pick one you invest in all and the winner will emerge. (classic case is the RDMS market in the 80’s and 90s where Oracle eventually won out)

Currently I’m not in HYZN and not sure they do survive, are the changes to their focus too late? Same could be said for PLUG but I am still in there. My current expectations are Bloom, Ballard and NKLA will be ok but not adding to my existing positions there yet. When the time comes - with a few more quarters of financials I can move profits from Linde and cummins into these as well.
