Jersey and Guernsey Launch Interoperable TETRA Networks
May 25 2011 - 5:00AM
Business Wire
Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI), the world’s leading provider of
mission-critical communications solutions, today announces that it
has provided interoperable Motorola TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked
RAdio) digital radio systems for police and emergency services in
the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey. The new systems will
allow Jersey and Guernsey to collaborate more effectively in public
safety provision and emergency situations, safeguarding more than
158,000 residents. For the first time worldwide, systems between
two separate states can be joined whenever needed.
By renewing and the ability of uniting the two TETRA systems,
Motorola solutions will help emergency services personnel in Jersey
and Guernsey to more efficiently safeguard public safety by
expanding the networks’ coverage and improving the tracking of
seagoing vessels and craft, while reducing the cost of supporting
their communications networks. Areas of the English Channel around
Jersey and Guernsey not previously reached will be brought under
the TETRA networks.
KEY FACTS
- Motorola Solutions has installed
Dimetra 7.1 TETRA infrastructure for both Jersey and Guernsey,
allowing both to operate independent secured TETRA networks with
push button interoperability between both islands’ public safety
communications systems. The unique interoperable systems were
launched during the first week of April.
- The new systems will allow both
communities access to an enhanced coverage area, including an area
of the English Channel that separates Jersey and Guernsey. This
enhancement will allow emergency services personnel to carry out
cliff rescues in areas that previously did not have radio coverage.
In addition, Jersey’s Motorola MTM5400 mobile will have gateway
repeater capability, enabling users to temporarily extend the
coverage area of the TETRA network through their individual
handsets.
- The Dimetra IP 7.1 TETRA systems
provide both Jersey and Guernsey with enhanced security. They have
secure communications through separated TETRA Encryption Algorithm
(TEA) 2 encryptions and Group Cypher Key (GCK) support.
- While Jersey has upgraded its TETRA
system, which was installed by Motorola 10 years ago as one of the
first TETRA systems in the world, Guernsey’s TETRA network has
replaced the previous system. The new platforms are state-of-
the-art and offer greater reliability and extended support for all
public safety services.
- The Motorola systems cover more than
2,000 users across all public service communications in Jersey and
Guernsey, including police, fire and coast guard services.
- Additionally, the two states have
signed service contracts for 10 years, including maintenance and
repair.
- The Dimetra IP TETRA solutions include
the ability for Jersey and Guernsey to upgrade the TETRA networks
to TETRA Enhanced Data Services (TEDS)-capable systems, making it
an ideal long-term solution for both islands’ public safety
needs.
- Motorola also is supplying a range of
devices to Jersey, such as MTP850 S TETRA radios and MTM5400 TETRA
mobiles. The MTM5400 ensures the call gets through with its
excellent receiver sensitivity. It is the first TETRA mobile with
voice and TEDS capability.
- As part of a separate tender, Motorola
has also supplied Jersey fire services with MTP850Ex ATEX radios.
These TETRA radios provide high quality communication with
comprehensive user safety and class-leading ATEX & IECEx
specifications, allowing use when in environments containing
potentially explosive gas and dust. Motorola´s rugged, intuitive
products undergo a series of rigorous tests to ensure superior
quality under the most extreme conditions.
