Edgewater Wireless Announces Letter of Intent with WCS Europe for Next-Generation Wi-Fi Spectrum Slicing Powered Access Point Solutions
https://www.reddit.com/r/EdgewaterWireless/s/Hkvpg2fBcV
“
is pleased to announce the signing of a Letter of Intent (the “LOI”) with Wesley Clover Services Europe (“WCS Europe”). The LOI contemplates the provision of Edgewater’s next-generation Wi-Fi Spectrum Slicing powered access point solutions for a wide range of enterprise applications, including Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications.
The LOI builds on an earlier established and expanded distribution agreement between the Company and WCS Europe and follows a successful pilot and field deployment in a ground-breaking IIoT application.
Initial deliveries of Edgewater’s next-generation Wi-Fi Spectrum Slicing powered access point solutions totalling approximately $400,000 are planned for later this calendar year (subject to final commercial terms).
“We are thrilled with the commercial progress WCS Europe has developed, and we are looking forward to further strengthening our partnership as they expand our addressable market to include Industrial Internet of Things applications,” said Andrew Skafel, President and CEO of Edgewater Wireless. “In challenging RF environments where legacy, single-channel Wi-Fi solutions struggle to deliver even baseline performance, the need for multi-channel/link solutions is growing beyond our initial target application(s) of home and enterprise Wi-Fi.”
“Edgewater’s Wi-Fi Spectrum Slicing technology clearly addresses a business driver in the IIoT space where an increasing reliance on Wi-Fi to provide industrial automation and control requires a robust, low latency Wi-Fi connection,” said Lionel Hovsepain, President of Wesley Clover Services Europe.
The LOI is subject to, amongst other things, the execution of a definitive purchase agreement and project financing

https://www.reddit.com/r/EdgewaterWireless/s/71IGkOWInx
“
proudly announces the submission of the third patent application within the invention titled "Method and Apparatus for In-Band Multi-Channel Determination and Utilization".
“With the rapid transition to WiFi7 and the increasing challenges associated with legacy, single-channel Wi-Fi, the importance of Spectrum Slicing continues to grow, and we continue to develop and patent innovative approaches to better wireless performance for ALL devices,” said Eric Smith, VP Product of Edgewater Wireless Systems Inc. “The series of patent applications punctuates a pivotal moment in our product strategy – based on years of direct customer engagements and deep insights into the challenges associated with legacy Wi-Fi. We’ve built something profound and continue to refine our innovations to deliver maximum customer value.”
The latest patent application caps a series of innovations targeting next-generation Wi-Fi and Wireless Communications:
Patent #1 US Application Number 18/643,333 and International Application No. PCT/CA2024/050533, established an artificially intelligent algorithmic stack designed to decide the optimal number and width of channels in a Spectrum Slicing (multi-link) radio array based on dynamic environmental data.
Patent #2 US Patent Application No. 18/643,386 and International Application No. PCT/CA2024/050533 established an algorithm stack designed to determine which channels within the Spectrum Slicing (multi-link) enabled radio array established with techniques in Patent #1 can be utilized for traffic or should be disengaged.
Patent #3 (US Patent Application No. 18/643,418 and International Application No. PCT/CA2024/050533) is the third and final patent application in the series; it describes the part of the overall invention which uses the unique spectral awareness capabilities, such as those included in Edgewater’s Spectrum Slicing chipset, or the Spectral Surveillance Architecture (SSA), to inform the algorithm regarding the relative health of the specific spectral band (ISM, UNII, etc.) attempting to be utilized by the channelized spectral environment. The algorithm then determines what spectral frequencies within the band utilized by the Spectrum Slicing-enabled (multi-link) radio array are clear enough from noise or interference to be fully utilized for traffic or should be disregarded or deprioritized for channelized use. The algorithmic stack detailed in this patent application describes an artificially intelligent component within the greater invention.
“As we move forward commercializing our next-generation Wi-Fi silicon solutions, one of our utmost priorities has been ring-fencing our IP – and we’ve achieved a significant milestone,” said Andrew Skafel, President and CEO of Edgewater Wireless. “We can now redouble our efforts to deliver engineering samples and reference designs for our next-generation Spectrum Slicing powered WiFi7 silicon solutions.”

If you are seeking patent protection in a number of countries worldwide, a good option is to file an international application under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), administered by WIPO. Any resident or national of a state party to the PCT (contracting state) can file a single international application which has the effect of a national patent application (and certain regional patent applications) in some or all PCT contracting states. In some cases, this can be a more straightforward choice than choosing to try to submit individual applications in each and every country in which you require protection. Find out more about the PCT System.

London, 16 May 2024: Virgin Media O2 Business and Crown Commercial Service (CCS) have signed a new ?3-year ?Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide enhanced technology and telecoms solutions to support ongoing digitisation efforts within the UK Government and broader public sector.
???Crown Commercial Service supports the public sector to achieve maximum commercial value when?? procuring common goods and services.?? In 2022/23, CCS helped the public sector to achieve commercial benefits equal to £3.8 billion – supporting world-class public services that offer best value for taxpayers. Through this new agreement, public sector entities will gain access to a comprehensive portfolio of Virgin Media O2 Business telecoms products and services, designed to enhance collaboration, expedite digitalisation, and provide maximum value for money.
Virgin Media O2 Business will provide solutions for fixed connectivity, mobile shared data bundles, IP telephony, professional services, equipment and devices. By engaging with the telco, and leveraging the procurement frameworks from CCS, customers can access a suite of telecoms services, including software-defined network functions crucial for digital transformation. ?This will allow? every eligible public sector organisation, from central government to local authorities and arm’s length bodies, to overcome barriers to connecting communities through a swifter and easier process.
In addition to simplified procurement processes, the new agreement will establish a new discounting model to provide public sector organisations with competitive rates. This innovative discount model will reward increased engagement by aligning with Government playbooks on procurement. This means it will be simpler and more cost-effective for public sector organisations to purchase, process, and manage telecoms services.
Connectivity is critical to communities across the UK and to helping individuals participate in an increasingly digital-led society. As the public sector looks for solutions to enhance public services and tackle digital literacy, this ?new agreement ?will provide easy access to new and innovative telecoms solutions, available for both trial and permanent adoption. Find out more about how organisations can tap into the benefits of connectivity here:
https://www.virginmediao2business.co.uk/public-sector/
Martin McFadyen, Director of Public Sector at Virgin Media O2 Business said: “Our new agreement with Crown Commercial Service will help accelerate digital transformation and offer innovative discounting for UK government bodies and public organisations. Whether overcoming barriers or exploring the advantages of 5G technology, there is a key role for Virgin Media O2 Business in supporting the public sector to get the most from telecoms technology and connecting communities across the nation. This partnership will also boost efforts to tackle digital literacy, helping people tap into the benefits of connectivity in their daily lives.”
Dr. Philip Orumwense, Commercial Director and Chief Procurement Officer for Technology at Crown Commercial Services said: “Mobile voice and data is an integral part of enabling service delivery for the public sector. The ability to talk and communicate to colleagues and citizens and access and share data quickly and securely has never been more important.
This new MoU uses the buying power that CCS has to deliver cost effective and soundly procured connectivity solutions from Virgin Media O2 Business. There will also be additional benefits for customers through increased social value and L&D opportunities.”

IBM is preparing to invest heavily in its 800-acre semiconductor packaging and testing plant
The federal and Quebec governments are spending close to $100 million to boost the country’s manufacturing capacity for semiconductors, which are vital in technologies ranging from artificial intelligence to quantum computing.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters today in Bromont, Que., that Ottawa will invest $59.9 million to help fund IBM Canada’s semiconductor packaging facility in the town about 70 kilometres southeast of Montreal. He says the investment will also go toward the Bromont-based MiQro Innovation Collaborative Centre, a research group that tries to speed up the commercialization of components in digital technologies.
Quebec, for its part, is offering IBM Canada $38.9 million in loans to help the company buy equipment, increase capacity at its Bromont plant, and create a new generation of switches. A news release from the federal government says the funding from both levels of government will help create 280 jobs in the region.
IBM Canada says its plant in Bromont is one of the continent’s largest chip assembly and testing facilities and that the money will solidify Canada’s place in the supply chain for advanced packaging of semiconductors.

There can be no doubt that the act will help network builders. It includes provisions to speed up the process of obtaining permits from landowners, albeit at a more watered-down level than many had hoped, and to run networks into buildings, for example. It also includes an extension to intra-EU retail price caps, which were due to expire on 14 May. The current caps of €0.19 per minute for voice calls and €0.06 per SMS message will now run until 30 June 2032. The EU is aiming for full gigabit coverage by 2030 and 5G networks in all populated areas by 2030. It recently published a State of the Digital Decade report which showed that at present fibre networks reach just 56% of households, while 5G covers 81% of the population, dropping to 51% in rural areas. So there's certainly some way to go, particularly when you consider that much of the low-hanging fruit has already been picked.
The EU has often quoted a figure of €200 billion as the necessary investment required to meet its coverage targets, so there's much more at play here than rules governing permitting and so forth.
Industry bodies ETNO, ECTA, GIGAEurope and the GSMA have made their feelings clear on the act in recent months: namely that the content of the act has been diluted far too much compared with what was first presented by the European Commission in early 2023. The industry is now looking to the next Commission – elections are due to take place later this year – for further development of infrastructure rules.

It’s the latest complication for the Chips Act, which became law in 2022. The Commerce Department has emphasized that it doesn’t want to give any company a penny more than needed. The agency only has $39 billion in grant funding to build a portfolio of projects spanning large-scale manufacturing, smaller-scale supply chain efforts, and commercial research and development.
That’s a lot of taxpayer money, but it’s a drop in the bucket for the overall chip industry. Advanced chipmakers alone have requested more than double the money set aside for them. And more than 600 firms have expressed interest in federal grants. The Commerce Department also has a loans and guarantees pool worth $75 billion, but the companies aren’t all interested in that financing.
…
The Commerce Department has already announced three awards to firms that manufacture older-generation chips, including a $1.5 billion grant to GlobalFoundries, which is among the top suppliers of older processors to the US military.
GlobalFoundries lobbied against the defense provision for Intel as government funding bills moved through Congress last week, according to people familiar with the matter. Some lawmakers have also expressed concerns about relying on just one company — Intel — to make cutting-edge chips for the most sensitive US government applications.
Right Approach?
In a statement, GlobalFoundries said it doesn’t believe Intel’s sole Secure Enclave designation is the right solution.
“GlobalFoundries has been a secure chip provider for decades,” a company spokesperson said. “We appreciate the US government’s effort to address the challenge. We have a proven approach.”
The Chips Act received bipartisan support, fueled by concern that a faltering domestic semiconductor industry was a national security problem — particularly in light of Washington’s growing rivalry with Beijing.
