Profoundly grateful for the publication of my "Bye bye Margins" article in Minería Chilena, the most prestigious mining journal in Chile.
Current hashtag#lithium pricing is destroying recent as well as future investment, pushing away new and needed Western refining capacity. What's really interesting is that brine/salar projects are quite cost competitive, despite being slower to develop compared to hard rock.

Lithium stocks surge as Chinese giant suspends major mine
By Kerry Sun
Wed 11 Sep 24
https://www.marketindex.com.au/news/lithium-stocks-surge-as-chinese-giant-suspends-major-mine
LNM?JKMajor lithium and battery manufacturer CATL has officially announced the suspension of its lithium lepidolite operation in Jiangxi. While rumors of CATL cutting or suspending lithium production in Jiangxi have circulated before, UBS expresses higher conviction this time. According to their channel checks with several contacts, CATL made the decision to suspend operations after a meeting on September 10.
lepidolite is the lowest grade of lithium out their it is the only lithium type China has it cost about $11k to $17k a ton to process.
Is this the turning point for the lithium prices? I hope so.
Copilot
The cost of producing lithium carbonate from lepidolite is relatively high compared to other sources. In China, it costs between 80,000 yuan ($11,230) and 120,000 yuan ($16,860) to produce one tonne of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) from lepidolite1. This is significantly higher than the cost of extracting lithium from brine deposits or spodumene, which ranges from 40,000 yuan to 60,000 yuan per tonne1.
Given these high production costs, lepidolite-based lithium production is often less economically viable, especially when lithium prices are low. This has led to some producers cutting back on lepidolite-based production to balance supply and demand

The Lone Star Lithium Boom
An ingenious Texan’s invention may soon bring extensive mining of the metal—vital for our increasingly battery-powered future—to the northeast corner of the state.
https://www.texasmonthly.com/news-politics/lithium-mining-boom-northeast-texas/
Over the years, to test his invention, Burba has evaluated brine samples from fifty locations around the world. “Most are crap,” he says, relaxing in jeans and black alligator boots in a large house with vaulted ceilings outside Atlanta, a small town a thirty-minute drive south of Texarkana. The brine containing the most lithium he’s found in North America, rivaling the best in the world, lies beneath a one-hundred-mile swath of northeast Texas and southern Arkansas. It’s a mostly rural area of soaring pines and muddy bayous. Burba’s home, where he and Carol moved in 2021 to be nearer her aging parents, sits smack in the middle of it.
The race is on to turn this area—home to a subterranean limestone formation known as the Smackover, once a productive oil field—into a globally significant lithium producer.
Fueled by several cups of coffee, an effusive Burba spoke nearly uninterrupted for three straight hours when I visited him in mid-July. The day before, the company he founded, Houston-based International Battery Metals, had announced the first commercial DLE lithium mine in the United States, in Utah, was operational. It had beaten a dozen companies—some, such as ExxonMobil, quite a bit larger—to this milestone.
Burba’s successful launch followed years of struggle to get a sustained DLE operation up and running in North America. In 2012, after just fifteen days of retirement, he got bored and joined an attempt to extract lithium from the scalding water that fed a geothermal power plant in California. Four years later he looked into the prospect of building a large DLE facility in the Canadian province of Alberta, but the plan sputtered because the costs involved were too high.
