Pre-Cool 101: Energy-Savings Innovation Is Supported by Lab Research, Field Studies

Energy savings of up to 30% by "pre-cooling" the most common type
of commercial and residential air conditioning systems is supported
by laboratory research and field studies, according to Greenway
Design Group, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: GDGI).
"Most homes and businesses have 'split-system' air conditioning,
and for these systems heat is problematic," says Darius Jakubik,
Greenway's senior vice president. "The more heat there is, the more
demand we put on the system. But the hotter it is outside, the less
efficiently AC systems can work. The key to energy-efficiency for
air conditioning is to lower the outside air temperature before it
goes into the condensing coils."
One study, conducted by the Department of Mechanical Engineering
at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA and commissioned by
Greenway in 2005, concluded, "by using Cool-n-Save, even in a
climate that endures high humidity, the heat transfer from the
refrigerant to the air is substantially increased."
A second completely independent study of pre-cooling was
conducted in 2009 by researchers at the Department of Building
Services Engineering at Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hong
Kong. This research also concluded that significant energy savings
may be generated by "enhancing the heat transfer rate in condensers
by using water mist to pre-cool ambient air temperature around the
condenser coils."
Researchers of both studies estimated that pre-cooling air
conditioning systems may decrease energy consumption by as much as
30%. Subsequent field studies of Cool-n-Save installations
conducted by Greenway Design Group, Inc. have produced results that
support the conclusion of the researchers.
More than 16,000 commercial and residential Cool-n-Save® pre-cooling systems have been sold. For
