E-Cycling on the Rise, Reports Suggest

The Consumer Electronics Association reports 53 percent
year-over-year growth for 2011 in the collection of gadgets; mobile
phone trade-ins also increase for participants in their eCycling
Leadership Initiative (www.bit.ly/I9Zf0t).
Overall, the initiative oversaw the collection and recycling of
460 million pounds last year, compared with 300 million pounds
recycled in 2010. There are now more than 7,500 places where you
can drop off technology, up from 5,000 just 12 months ago. This
expansion is marked by Staples' (SPLS) and
Hewlett-Packard's joint recycling program announced in the earlier
part of this month. Other major retailers, like Best Buy
(BBY) began their "takeback" program three
years ago with the expectation that it could initially lose between
$5 million and $10 million on the program. The program began
turning a profit last year, proving that e-cycling can be a viable
business.
Late last week, Readen Holding Corp's (PINKSHEETS: RHCO)
subsidiary Moho-Telecom began a joint venture with specialist
consumer electronic product collector and processor, Zwipit, to
start offering Zwipit's recycling program to their retail network
and related websites. An estimated 2700 collection locations for
used phones in the Netherlands, Belgium and France should be in
place by October 2012.
