Walmart said it will open its first owned-and-operated case-ready beef facility in 2025, in Olathe, Kan.

The retailer said the plant will "offer greater visibility into our supply chain" and create more than 600 jobs.

Walmart said in 2019 it would develop its own supply chain for Angus beef.

Last August, Walmart said it would buy a minority stake in Nebraska-based Sustainable Beef as part of a broader partnership. The Kansas facility will package and distribute Angus cuts from Sustainable Beef for stores in the Midwest.

In 2019, Costco Wholesale opened a chicken slaughtering and processing facility in Nebraska.
