North American Rail Traffic Fell 7.4% in Week Ended Dec. 14

North American rail traffic fell 7.4% last week, extending the
full-year decline, data from the Association of American Railroads
showed.
Carload volume for the week ended Dec. 14 on a dozen reporting
U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads slid 7.7%, while intermodal
traffic fell 7.1%, the trade group said Wednesday.
North American rail traffic was down 7.6% in the week ended Dec.
7. For the first 50 weeks of the year, North American volume is now
down 3.8%, compared with a year-to-date drop of 3.7% reported a
week earlier.
The AAR said U.S. rail traffic fell 8.5% last week on the heels
of a 9.4% drop a week earlier. U.S. carloads fell 9%, as shipments
of coal, the largest of the 10 commodity groups tracked, tumbled
20.6%. The volume of U.S. intermodal containers and trailers fell
8% for the week.
U.S. rail traffic is down 4.8% for the year to date, the trade
group said.
The AAR said Canadian rail traffic fell 4% last week, as
carloads slipped 3.7% and intermodal units fell 4.2%.
Mexican rail traffic fell 6.3% last week amid a 7.6% drop in
carloads and a 4.9% decline in intermodal units.
