Higher One CARES (Community Action for Resources Education and
Service), the community outreach group at Higher One, held its
second annual Volunteer Fair on Tuesday.
The mission of the Volunteer Fair is to connect those interested
in becoming more active in the community with organizations in need
of support. The successful event attracted approximately 150 people
comprised of the public, Higher One employees, and other companies
and their staff who attended to learn how they can make a
difference. Attendees had a chance to mingle and connect with
prominent community groups while enjoying music performed by a
quartet from Music Haven and refreshments donated by New Haven’s
Elm City Market.
Nearly 20 non-for-profit groups were represented Tuesday,
including:
• All Our Kin
• Solar Youth
• Community Foundation of Greater New
Haven
• Boys and Girls Club
• New Haven Reads
• International Festival of Arts &
Ideas
• United Way
• Neighborhood Housing Services of New
Haven
• Junior Achievement
• YMCA
• LEAP
“We're grateful that Higher One is making a real, sustained
commitment to New Haven—and encouraging their employees to put down
roots in our community,” said Joel Tolman, Director of Development
and Community Engagement at Common Ground, an environmental
education center. “Local non-profits like Common Ground don't have
enough opportunities to speak directly to potential volunteers,
especially professionals who bring lots of skills and
experience to the table. It's great that Higher One is helping to
make that connection.”
“Through Higher One CARES, we are able to directly and
positively impact the communities where we live and work. Building
on the strong economic benefits our presence brings to New Haven,
our employees find meaning in contributing in other ways, too,”
said Miles Lasater, co-founder and COO of Higher One.
Higher One CARES was formed by employees at Higher One to
help identify opportunities for community involvement and
engagement. Though CARES supports a variety of local
not-for-profits, its mission is focused on helping build the
community based on education, financial literacy and
entrepreneurship. Higher One was founded in New Haven in 2000 by
students, for students and has recently shifted its national
headquarters in New Haven to the newly-renovated Winchester Arms
Factory. The founders share their passion for community involvement
by encouraging employees to make an impact through local efforts
that match their interest and by giving each employee one full paid
day a year to use as a “Day of Service.” For more detailed
information on the event and the community groups represented,
