The Federal Aviation Administration has issued final safety directives aimed at preventing engine covers from breaking apart on Boeing 777 jets with Pratt & Whitney engines.

The final directives pave the way for the jets to return to service, over a year after a broken fan blade on the engine of a United Airlines' 777 caused an engine cover to detach, raining metal debris onto a Denver suburb.

The directives, which were proposed in December, require strengthened engine covers and enhanced engine fan-blade inspections.

United had hoped to start restoring the planes to service this month.
