CLOSTER, N.J. and ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Feb. 28, 2012
/PRNewswire/ -- Ericom Software, a leading global provider of
application access and virtualization solutions, and Quest
Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: QSFT), a leader in IT management solutions
for physical, virtual and cloud environments, today announced that
Kingston University has acquired
AccessNow to empower its 27,500 students and staff with access to
some of its 1,000+ applications, including virtual and
session-based desktops and applications published through Quest®
vWorkspace — from any location and from any device.
In acquiring AccessNow and embracing the Bring Your Own Device
(BYOD) trend, Kingston seeks to
make Quest vWorkspace managed desktops, and the University's entire
student online learning environment, accessible from the widest
variety of end point device types possible. This includes from
Chromebooks, over 7,000 workstations (PC, Mac, and Linux), iPads,
laptops and more.
"We believe HTML5 technology is the future," says Kingston
University Technical Architect, Daniel
Bolton. "We want to make our systems as accessible as
possible from every device possible." Bolton added, "AccessNow –
Ericom's HTML5 RDP client - enables us to reach more users in
different ways. If a user needs a quick, simple way to connect to a
Quest vWorkspace desktop comprising core, good old-fashioned
Microsoft Office and software like IBM® SPSS®, or to other inline
applications, from whatever device, Ericom AccessNow is the best
way to do that. This is especially true now that we're beginning to
see more and more students with the Google Chromebook wandering
about campus."
Brian Berns, Ericom Software's
President and COO commented: "We're extremely pleased that
Kingston University has chosen
AccessNow as a complement to their Quest vWorkspace deployment. The
combined features and functionality of both solutions moves
Kingston closer to their goals of
device-independence and the non-managed desktop devices, by
providing a complete, scalable solution that unifies access to
their entire arsenal of Windows-based content and Web applications
from every location and every device."
"We are delighted that Kingston
University has selected AccessNow to extend the reach of virtual
Windows desktops and applications managed by Quest vWorkspace to a
new wave of devices and access models," said Jon Rolls, Vice President of Product Management
for User Workspace Management at Quest Software. "By supporting all
HTML5-capable devices and browsers, AccessNow and Quest vWorkspace
will give Kingston students and
faculty instant access without any agents or plug-ins, accelerating
the adoption and reach of desktop virtualization."
Ericom AccessNow provides the following IT benefits:
- Runs entirely within a browser — working natively with Chrome,
Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox and any other browser with HTML5
and WebSockets support.
- Runs on PCs, netbooks, Google Chromebooks, iPad / iPhone,
Android tablets and smartphones, thin clients and supports Intel
x86, ARM or any other CPU architecture
- Looks and works the same way on all supported device types,
thus reducing training and help desk costs
- Lowers IT workload - IT staff do not have to manage or maintain
separate product versions and updates for an ever-increasing
variety of end-user devices; an HTML5 browser that supports
WebSockets is all that is required.
- Simple, easy and inexpensive to maintain - does not require any
infrastructure for deployment, upgrades or patches – simply put new
version on the server
- Integrates with homegrown and enterprise portals
