Enel SpA said Monday that its Brazilian renewable-energy subsidiary is building five new plants in the country, with a total capacity of 1.3 gigawatts.

Enel Green Power Brasil Participacoes Ltda. has begun construction on four wind farms and one solar plant in Brazil's north-east, the Italian energy company said. The Sao Goncalo III solar plant is being built in the state of Piaui, and will take the Sao Goncalo solar site to a total installed capacity of 864 megawatts.

The four new wind farms, meanwhile, are being built in the states of Piaui, Bahia, Rio Grande do Norte and Pernambuco.

Enel is investing around 5.6 billion reais ($1.11 billion) in the projects, it said. The plants will mostly be supported by power-supply contracts with Brazilian corporate customers. Operations are set to begin next year, with the exception of the Lagoa dos Ventos II wind farm, where operations should begin in 2022, Enel said.
