Utility Stocks Retreat, But The Run Is Not Over Yet
The Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSEARCA:XLU) has been on an amazing run higher since December 26, 2018. It should be noted that when interest rates decline the utility stocks will generally move higher and that is exactly what has occurred. On December 26, 2018 the popular XLU traded as low as $50.81 a share before breaking out to new 52 week highs. On March 14, 2019 the XLU traded as high as $58.74 a share before staging a minor pullback. Today, the XLU is trading around the $57.55 level. Traders and investors can easily see that the trend is up on the XLU and that another pullback in the ETF is a likely buying opportunity. At this time, the $55.00 area looks like solid daily chart support. This is where the 50 and 100-day moving averages are currently. This level should be defended when initially tested. The only thing that could disrupt the XLU trend would be higher interest rates and that is highly unlikely to occur at this time.

Will Utility Stocks Ever Be A Buy Again?
Everyone trader in the world knows that utility stocks are very sensitive to higher interest rates. In other words, the higher the interest rate the worst the utility stocks will perform. Recently, interest rates on the 10-year U.S. Treasury Note has been increasing. Today, the yield on the 10-year note are trading at 2.63 percent and climbing. If you look at a chart of the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLU:NYSE Arca) you will see that it has been declining as yields on the 10-year note has risen. This just shows us how inverse the utility sector is to higher bond yields.
Traders and investors should understand that bonds yields are not going to the moon anytime soon. The Federal Reserve is expected to raise rates just three times this year. The next rate hike by the central bank is expected in March, so this current move higher in interest rates is probably factored in already. This tells me that utilities could be a buy at some point this year. Traders and investors should watch the $45.00 level on the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSEArca:XLU). This level is where the XLU broke out in January 2016. Often, when key technical areas are retested they will serve as major chart support. This is the level where I will be looking to buy the XLU.

Excellent points Larry. I guess it all depends on a persons trading perspective. Are you trading short term only? I know you are. So trading with the trend which is up for the XLU and XLE would be a better bet than the SMH or XLK. The SMH is definitely in a downtrend. It has been showing signs of trying to turn it around but I don't think that will happen until all other sectors of the market have sold off some too.
The XLU and associated utilities have been in a strong. My only concern is that even utilities will get sold if the entire market sells off hard like it did yesterday. I think the XLU has a good chance of heading higher to form a long term double top where it will then sell off.
If we do head into a recession one of the first areas that will show leadership among stock groups will be technology and the SMH. Utility stocks may actually lag at that point but if you look at the charts they all get hurt in an actual recession:
Sector rotation shown with sector SPDR's on Long Term Monthly Charts - XLY (Consumer Discretionary comprised of Cyclicals/Transports) expected to move early in an economic recovery, XLK (Technology) expected to move early in an economic recovery, XLI (Industrials) expected to pick up next and carry on a little longer than the XLY or XLK spider, XLB (Basic Industry) next in line to do well rounding out the early phase of an economic recovery, XLE (Energy) expected to perform well as the recovery becomes well recognized, XLP (Staples) next to be expected to perform well as the recovery becomes well recognized, XLV (Services including Healthcare) As the economic recovery becomes even more mature money is expected to rotate into this area next until it becomes more obvious that the recovery has peaked, XLU (Utilities) As the recovery peaks stocks in general begin to under perform as rates rise and investors look for safe investments offering higher yields, XLF (Financials) As the recovery peaks stocks in general begin to under perform as rates rise and investors look for safe investments offering higher yields,
