LafargeHolcim Ltd.(LHN.EB) said Wednesday that it will invest
160 million Swiss Francs ($161 million) to reduce the energy it
uses and the amount of greenhouse gases it produces when making
products in Europe.
The Swiss cement maker, which aims to cut its CO2 emissions in
Europe by 3 million metric tons by 2022, said it will invest in
equipment and technologies that increase the use of low-carbon
fuels and recycled materials in its processes and products.
LafargeHolcim said it will allocate further funds towards
introducing materials and services that are carbon efficient.
As a way to improve its carbon efficiency, the company said it
will start using recycled materials instead of fossil fuels and
primary raw materials to produce clinker. Clinker is the main
component of cement and its production releases large amounts of
CO2 into the atmosphere.
LafargeHolcim estimates it will be able to give a new use to 1.5
million tons of waste, which will help it avoid 1 million tons of
CO2 emissions per year.
