Telefonica SA (TEF.MC) said Wednesday that it has appointed Claudia Sender Ramirez and Veronica Pascual Boe as independent directors.

The telecommunications company said the appointments would increase female representation in its 17-member board of directors to 30%. The new directors replace Wang Xiaochu and Luiz Fernando Furlan, who have resigned, it said.

Telefonica also appointed Peter Loescher, former chief executive of Siemens AG (SIE.XE), as chairman of the audit and control committee, effective Feb. 19.

Javier Echenique has been appointed as lead independent director and chairman of the nominating, compensation and corporate governance committee, the company said.
