The new courses, 1) Performance of an Oral and Head and Neck Examination 4th Edition, 2) Intraoral Bitewing Radiographic Technique 4th Edition, 3) Going Green in the Dental Practice, 4) Transitioning From Paper to Electronic Records – A Process Guide, 5) Radiographic Quality Assurance for Film Imaging Systems 4th Edition, and 6) Making Pediatric Dentistry Part of General Practice 3rd Edition, can be completed online for continuing education credits at www.metdental.com.

These offerings and credits are available at no charge to participating dental offices within the dental preferred provider organization (DPPO) and managed dental plans offered by the MetLife family of companies. Non-participating providers also have access to the program and are assessed a nominal fee for educational credits.

1. Performance of an Oral and Head and Neck Examination 4th Edition is by James J. Sciubba, DMD, PhD, from The Milton J. Dance Head and Neck Center, Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Baltimore, MD. The guide outlines the nine steps that should be taken in the oral and head and neck examination process to prevent overlooking the evaluation of important anatomical structures. Also included is a form designed for use with individual patients that reflects the nine step examination and provides an easy way to document patient information.

2. Intraoral Bitewing Radiographic Technique 4th Edition, by Sally M. Mauriello, RDH, BS, EdD, professor in the Department of Dental Ecology at the University of North Carolina, and Dan Shugars, DDS, PhD, MPH, professor of Operative Dentistry at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. The guide explains the proper way to administer a bitewing radiograph to maximize the quality of the image as well as common mistakes that are made and how to correct them.

3. Going Green in the Dental Practice, by Diane Shugars, DDS, MPH, PhD, adjunct associate professor of the department of dental ecology at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, explores the many ways that dental offices can modify traditional practices to become more environmentally friendly. Increased efficiency and conservation practices, such as recycling or going paperless, paired with government incentive programs can help practices both protect the environment as well as their finances.

4. Transitioning From Paper to Electronic Records – A Process Guide, by Titus Schleyer, DMD, PhD, associate professor and director of the Center for Dental Informatics, and Thankam P. Thyvalikakath, DMD, MDS, MS, assistant professor of the Center for Dental Informatics, describes the steps that should be taken in order to help a dental practice go from a paper record system to an electronic record system. The guide provides instructions on the type of equipment an office should have as well as how to convert and maintain data to insure a smooth transition.

5. Radiographic Quality Assurance for Film Imaging Systems 4th Edition, by Sally M. Mauriello, RDH, BS, EdD, professor in the department of dental ecology at the University of North Carolina, and Dan Shugars, DDS, PhD, MPH, professor of operative dentistry at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. The guide outlines the necessary procedures that need to take place in order to successfully develop radiographic exposures as well as the equipment that the development room should possess.

6. Making Pediatric Dentistry Part of General Practice 3rd Edition, by Norman Tinanoff, DDS, professor and chair of the department of health promotion and policy dental school at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, details how to give the proper dental care to children so that the child and parent are both comfortable and satisfied with the service. The guide outlines how to comfort children during their visit to insure that they are not scared as well as the proper techniques for procedures performed on children, such as pulp therapy, to insure the best possible care.
