Traders feel that lower volatility; falling oil prices and a cheaper pound all helped the FTSE consolidate its recent gains. In Asia all the markets that we track are in positive territory, with only the BSE in the red, retreating after breaching the 6000-mark. The Hang Seng is up over 1.15 pts cheered up by falling oil prices and interest rate cuts. The U.S. Dollar Index fell 0.14 points during U.S. trading yesterday. The dollar drifted lower even amid the outlook on interest rates in the wake of Wednesday's quarter-point hike in the federal funds target. The greenback managed to hold above its recent lows. A lack of news to trade on as well as the Veterans Day holiday contributed to light U.S. trading in currencies overall. For the 8% of American homes that rely upon heating oil for warmth, the total average heating oil bill for the October-March winter period could come to around $1,300. But heating oil customers aren't alone. Natural gas bills are also expected to climb around 15%. Fortunately, electricity costs will only see an average 5% rise. But the few who use propane for heat could see a 26% jump in costs this winter. Elsewhere, Coca-Cola sales remain sluggish. The drinks manufacturer and Dow component Coca-Cola reported another gloomy outlook and trimmed its long-term earnings forecasts, thanks to continuing weakness in North America and Europe. From a previous earnings-per-share growth forecast of 11-12%, Coca-Cola cut that back to 9% on the back of 3-4% sales growth, down from its earlier 5-6% projection. Hardly surprising since the company has averaged a tepid 2.3% average annual sales growth over the past five years. Over the same period, its share price has slumped around 30%, in stark contrast to Pepsi's, which has soared 58%. And its share of the US$63.8 billion US drinks market has dropped in three of the past four years. However, from 2005, Coca-Cola will spend an extra US$350-400 million a year on new products and marketing, focusing on growing markets in Asia.
